Ive recently changed my tubes in my herbert. Both power and v1 and v2 preamp tubes.
Im still getting a lot of feedback from channel three with the gain only at 1:30. Is this normal.? Its the kind of feedback youd expect with the gain all the way up and a compressor pedal on etc.. Channel 2's gain is turned up to 3 oclock and its pretty quiet..
Thoughts..?

yep, pretty normal with high gain preamp tubes, for me anyway. do what i did....buy an mxr smart gate pedal. worth their weight in gold for high gain. or, you can tame V1 a little with a tung-sol.

Sounds normal to me. I get more or less feedback depending on the guitar/pickup combination, but on Channel 3 with the gain between 12-1, my guitars tend to feedback quite a bit.

hmmm...i guess thats good.. At least it isnt a problem. I used to have the gain up to almost 3 and barely got that feedback. BUt its probably on a different guitar. ive got a boss noisgate pedal and it does the trick, its just not that dynamic and does kinda affect the tone. i used to have that fancy isp decimator in a rack version and couldnt figure it out. I need something simpler with less cables.

I will keep the tung sol in mind. Im guessing channel 3 is v1?

BTW though. Im loving the Herbert with the new tubes in it( the new el 34's). Been on tour for a week now and have been getting some great tones. Last night in Boise was just CRUSHING tones. Thick heavy Rythyms and Eric Johnson'y leads! Was definitely into it. Always changing from venue to venue every night. Ive recently changed my setting for a more dynamic sound and im kinda liking it. If any of yall live in cali and wanna come see us we will be all over the state for a week starting tomorrow... Then Vegas and Arizona. Would love to meet some of yall.

I'd try another preamp tube in whichever slot (or slots) affect Ch3. I don't have the problems with feedback like you're describing at all at stage/band volumes in my Herbert and don't think you should either. Oh, and as to the new 34's, I told ya you would love em!! See post in previous thread quoted here -

eww..brighter eih..? I want warmer :aww:
oh well...maybe if they are brighter in a sparkle kind of way that would be good.
We will be recording in the studio right after this band fireflight next month and i want a good tone.

Uh no. Correction on my part. I just spent the better part of an hour with my Herbert and indeed I was dead wrong. They're actually warmer and less, I don't know, sterile maybe? Really fat, warm, and crunching. Definitely emphasizes the low mids and bass chunk inherent in the amp. Seems even tighter than before if that's possible

So, why the about-face? Well, I realized the last guitar I played through the amp was one with a rather bright tendency to it and also a thinner sounding pup than my regular gigging/recording guitars. Once I strapped those on and plugged in, I immediately realized I'd given an incorrect assessment in my previous post. Trust me Rob, you will dig the hell out of these. I'm happy that Peter is favoring them since I really didn't want to go to 6550's if I didn't have to as I was in love with the 34 tone in this head. So yes, killer tubes, killer amp. All around greatness!

Now I will go with 6550's in my forthcoming VH4.....

I have no problem with feeback from my Herbie & i play with the master up near 1 to 2 oclock @ times..so its honking loud...enuff to deafen small children & animals.  My gain is also up between 1 & 3 oclock. Might be your pickups or even your pre's.

Found it:

Preamp-tube layout Herbert

V1 Used by all channels
V2 Used by channel 3
V3 Used by all channels
V4 Mixer & Loop Driver
V5 Return Driver
V6 Phase Inverter

It´s physics guys !

I can lower the gain amount in the circuit but You should
do it with the knob.

No gain limit, but watch for the feedback police :D
