Is this typical Gibson now or was their shenanigans from the guy I bought this from?

It’s a 2023 SG.

A mix of both. I see string pop dents from restrings or possibly string cleaning and the frets need a lot of work for crowning and polishing.

As far as the fucking gouges of wood missing from your guitar that’s all on your prior owner. Nothing like that leaves Gibson.

It’s hard to find talented luthier work lately. So many people doing awful work and charging for it.

Looks like a garage coat hanger repaint job to me.

I’d say that neck is trashed. Back needs repainted and the fretboard has literal wood missing around the frets likely from someone not removing the originals correctly.

The frets are not big. Have the traditional Gibson flat top. Hard to imagine a refret to put in the same size or smaller. I know Gibson’s been using a smaller wire lately. I’m going to see if I can find the same model at a GC so I can compare them. String spacing is slightly narrower than I’m used to on a Gibson too, so maybe the nut is cut out of spec…not sure. I played a new one a while ago of these before and didn’t think anything was out of the ordinary on string spacing etc. I’ll know more when I get my hands on a new one. Guitar was listed as excellent condition on Reverb and can’t say I’m all that excited about it.

They usually come with 6 strings. :ROFLMAO:
Jokes aside, buying a Gibson is a crap shoot. I tell everyone thinking about buying one, run the racks. Get your hands on as many as you can. You'll find a great one. Don't buy online unless you can return for a full refund.

I played several Slash models before I found the one. Some were dogs.
I played something like 10 different ES-335s at 5 different stores before I found the keeper, and it's one of the best guitars I've ever played. Perfect action, sound, no feedback with high gain, gorgeous with no cosmetic defects. They should all be that way for the price, but only this one was.
I bought and returned 2 different Adam Jones Les Pauls that had horrible issues. Should have never left the factory. Every Mustaine V I've seen is jacked in some way.

The guitar in the OP def has issues from the seller. But also seems like it wasn't a good one in the first place.
I recently went thru something similar with an Anderson off Reverb. Didn't want to pass on my problems to someone on the forums, so took a huge hit trading it in. Never again.

🙂 I noticed the file marks while changing the strings. I’m bummed because I played the same model in a store and dug it so figured this being a recent 2023 would basically be the same and like you said…nope.
It’s amazing that Gibson calls these frets medium jumbo. Unless their reference point is pornstar size in Asia.

Two of the same model can come off the line in consecutive order, and be totally different. It's just the way it is with Gibson. The good ones are the best guitars. The other ones, quite a disappointment.
I'm kind of nervous, saying that. I jumped at a new Charlie Starr LP Jr that popped up for sale on Monday.
They were announced in May, sold out fast. Only 500 were available, 250 in walnut and 250 in matte black.
A couple of new ones have shown up in the past couple of weeks. Folks are bailing on their pre-order?
I saw one pop up new from Eddie's, just an hour after it was listed. It already had plenty of watchers on Reverb. I've been wanting a Jr for a while, dig Charlie's playing. Figured I can at least get my $ back if I don't dig it. I know it's a risk, rolling the dice, but I hope it shows up in good shape, with no issues. I'll find out tomorrow! If UPS doesn't screw up.

Based on her reactions, I'm positive the Filipino lady I've been "friends" with this past year would agree with your last point.
For real tho, the frets on my 335 always throw me off when I first pick it up. Smaller than anything else I have. I get used to them pretty quick. Now I'm wondering if she does the same thing...I digress.

I recently replaced the original frets on my 02 Classic with jumbo ss. TBH, I missed the original frets at first. I've never had a guitar refretted before. The new frets felt kind of funky. I guess it takes time for everything to settle when you get new frets? I guess it broke in, because now, it feels and plays fantastic. Any of my friends that play it leave here and start shopping LPs. It's the guitar they want to play when they come over. I have a Suhr Modern, Custom Shop Fender. They want to play my beat to hell LP Classic.

I definitely need to play a guitar before I buy it.
I'm too subjective to do it any other way.

I don't buy Gibson's, so I've had pretty good luck with buying guitars online. EBMM, Ibanez, Jackson, and others, including Fender MIM.

I have a few (4) EBMM Kaizen, Ibanez PS (5) and Jackson Rhoads (3), and two things I noticed for these brands: 1) consistency; 2) good QC at each price point. The Kaizen and PS10, even the PS120, fit, finish, setup, were all near perfect. My Rhoads are all X-series (Indonesia IIRC), and can't find any flaws in the fit and finish either.

I never care who made the guitar.
My list is really short.
Does it sound good ? I usually play hundreds before I find one I like the sound of it unplugged.
Is it functional.
That's all of it.

I don't have many options around here to try guitars, so online is about it or I'd have to pre-pay and special order, or go to GC. The online shops have good return policies, and out of dozens of guitars over the last 10+ years, I've only returned a few. EBMM, Ibanez and Jackson I've had zero issues...I wouldn't buy a Gibson without playing it first tho'

To the OP: for me part of those finishing/built issues look similar to what I’ve seen from Gibson, too often, throughout the years… 😢

^This. Gibsons are try before You buy guitars for me these days, unfortunately. The finishing quality in paint/binding/frets/nut/fretboard etc can be anything from disgustin to perfect. On the other hand I bought a new Fender YJM Strat with a rosewood fretboard new a few months ago and I had to return it due to incredibly bad issues with fretboard. What has happened to the big companies?

Just as a side comment: I have spent years and years playing various Gibson LPs and SGs. I can think of 2 LPs that stood out to me and an SG. I have ordered guitars online before, and have even done so with a Gibson I solely purchased to resell, but I would be more concerned with getting a Gibson I didn't like. 1 of the 2 LPs that I have liked in my life, I was fortunate enough to buy and no other guitar like it compares. I have tried other singlecut variants, and they do their thing, but this Les Paul studio + or whatever is an absolute monster of a guitar.
