ISP Decimator G String II versus ...

I'm looking into getting one of these for my higher gain amps.

I used to own an ISP (regular) Decimator nearly a decade ago and quickly sold it... I have no idea if ISP is still the company to go. If so, how does it compare to the rack version? If not, which brands would you suggest?

All of my amps have an effects loop.

I have a pro rack g I'm getting ready to unload. Pm me if interested.

My studio uses 5 G-String GRacks and has never looked back.....The best....

its a great gate for high gain amps. get rid of that preamp hiss!

-hey keennay,

-all amp noise?

-do you use a lot of effects or just to quiet the amp down?

-with lots of effects, the decimator rack is still the best-(if you have no rack and want a pedal I'd go BOSS NS2)-

-no or very few pedal-(not generating any added noise)-effects-i'd go gate

-they all suck tone, some more than other's, if you can find another way to reduce the noise-(filtering, line voltage filtering, dirty power elimination etc.)-then I'd try to reduce it and live with it.

I have the Decimator G II pedal. It works fantastic. But if you get one be careful the G version requires you to hook it up to the instrument input as well as the effects loop or it won't operate. I found out a way to jump the iloop outputs with a patch cord to make it work without using it in my loop. But thus is not explained anywhere in the instructions. Just a heads up. Otherwise it's pretty awesome and can't hear any tone suck whatsoever.

Thanks guys.

SG Guy, this is for my Cameron Atomica with no pedals or anything... just the guitar plugged in directly. It's the noisiest amp I've ever played in my life, and I've already had the power transformer replaced by Dave Friedman.

I can post a YouTube vid tomorrow if needed. I checked out a couple of YouTube vids demonstrating the Decimator, and it seems like it'd take care of that problem.

I'd bought the amp when it was 2-3 years old, so I didn't think a replacement was needed. On the other hand, I have a Marshall JMP ~40 years old with the original filter caps and sounds stellar.

Yup, great pedal, but uses 4 cables. The signal from the guitar triggers it, but the gate works in the FX loop so it kills any noise from the preamp as well as the noise from your pedals.
Works amazing and I can't hear any tone suck either.

Nice. I'm assuming the ProRack is essentially the same thing in rack form?

Regarding the ISP G Series: I see there's a G String pedal, G String II pedal, and ProRack G... but no ProRack G II. What benefit does the G String II hold over the G String I? Is the ProRack G version the way to go if I already own rack space (which I do).

Thanks

The G String II is the latest version of the pedal that does the 4 cable thing. There is a decimator pedal with one signal path, but I think the G String version without the II is obsolete and out of production. I believe the G String II pedal and the pro rack G are the same tech / functionality, different form factor. Never really looked at the rack because I wanted the pedal format for my pedal board ( don't run any rack gear). The ISP website should have all the info.

^ sorry but that's not correct.
The rack version is highest level of gating technology isp has to offer. It states it Clearly on the product info for the pro rack g. It's also the only unit isp offers that can do line level. The pedals do not. The "II" revision really only allows for you to link 2 single pedals, the improvement for the gate was negligible.

Awesome, thanks again guys!

LunatiBSW, payment was sent for the Prorack G!

Oops , my bad!! I was going from memory from when I was looking to buy the pedal a while back.
Yes your right, the pro rack g is a whole other level of technology.
I love the G String pedal, but that rack unit must be killer!
Should be exactly what the OP is looking for.

Was going to chime in with this.

IMO - if you don't mind rack gear, buy the guys Pro Rack. It's the best.

If you go pedals it depends. Do you get major amp hiss AND feedback? If yes you may want either two gates or there are a few pedals that can hit the loop and the front.

I have the rack and pedal versions. The pedal is good, much better than version I which I also have. The rack version is another level of good. Expensive, but I think it's some of the best money I've ever spent on my rig. It is that damn good. I won't even bother, look at or recommend any other noise gate/noise reduction than the G String II, pedal or preferable rack.

Nothing touches the ISP stuff. I have all the pedals and the rack and have never been happier in my various user applications.
