Hey Kage,

I don't have direct experience with either (only own the first edition Decimator), but from watching vids I kind of like the Smartgate even though the ISP stuff is popular on the forums.

Hey Tom, I used to have an early edition Decimator but the prices on them have almost doubled. The smargate is reasonably priced and looks like it can hang... The G string is cool in the fact that it does front of the amp AND the FX loop...

Never tried the MXR SmartGate.. I do own the ISP Decimator G-string and have been very very happy with it. Doesnt affect the tone or sustain and does it job like it suppose to.

yeah the smart gate WILL affect your tone in a bad way get the isp for sure

I've got the rackmount ISP...it blows away the Hush unit I used to use.

Same as has been stated. I only have experience with the ISP. Don't need to experience anything else, it does exactly what it should. Definitely highly recommend it!

I used to have a smart gate and it was ok, I have the standard decimator pedal and it is as good as the hype would tell you Kage. I have been using it for probably five years with zero issues and it is as transparent as it gets. I actually bought mine from Derek B. when he was still running rock solid amps.

LOL Shane!!! I bought mine from Derek as well and got rig of it because I just wasnt using it and I hate keeping things around that I dont use. Unforunately, this was one of those things that I should have held on to. Im not dealing with major noise issues at all, its a minor hiss that bugs me .Guess Ill just get a decimator and be done with it. Shame that the Smartgate is inferior..

I've got a Smart Gate and don't notice any tone changing issues with it. If it is problems with noisy pedals or bad wiring you are trying to knock out, the higher settings will certainly gate the sustain. But, if I use mine, it is usually run with the wireless to knock out a small hiss. With the Smart Gate, just turn it all the way down on the Hiss setting and it is gone. I can't imagine needing more.

But, I haven't tried an ISP, so I can't compare.

I love my Decimator, and have had an NS-2 for years. I use the ISP predominantly because it simply keeps my tone in tact better.
I've never tried a Smartgate but really would like to. I've also heard good things about the new MXR Noise Clamp.

For me. The decimator is one of the pedals that is always on. Doesn't color your tone and it takes away unnecessary noise, what's not to love!

with my newer setup, the mojave pickup, the fender superchampxd, and a slew of drive pedals, i threw the decimator back in service this past weekend after a good 4 year slumber in the box

left it on for clean and dirty tone and it worked well!

I can't tell you how many things I have sold over the years I wish I would have kept but i'm the same way if it's not getting used it gets sold.

i agree but for some reason this one made the cut--i had it for sale at one point--and in the end it was kinda like trying to sell off an extra pack of strings--you know you're going to need it eventually.

This is 100% true and it's not very good at what it does either!

Kage i have a first edition Decimator that i'm not using since i use my Rocktron guitar silencer all the time. i'd be willing to sell the decimator to you if ya want it. I don't have a box for it nor the manual for it but it's in excellent shape.

Just make sure you use whatever you get correctly. Apparently I was using the G-string I had wrong and I hated it. For me I will just live with the noise.

I haven't tried the G-String but I've had both the regular Decimator and Smartgate- definitely go with the Decimator. Better noise reduction and less tone coloration IMO, as well as easier to use as it's just one knob.
