I cant find a maple boarded RG550 at a reasonable price, so this seems to be the next best option for a maple boarded shredder. I know a few of you guys have this - how is it as a cheap shredder style guitar? Specs seem great on paper, Ive had Japanese jacksons in the past and they are great too.

I guess the big question is the bridge. Does it stay in tune? Any complaints?

I understand the quality control is mixed on those. Some are great, some are firewood. You have to go play them and find one, I wouldn't order sight unseen.

Seems like your talkin 'used'. The big question is the feel of the neck. 2 different worlds, with the 550 being thinner by contrast. You'll get more tone options on the HSH of a 550, but either way, you gotta play it first, any guitar, mid level no exception, and that aint gonna happen on Ebay.... a Maple board can be as twisty as Hell, an without a 'look down the barrels' you have no idea if the things gonna play low an straight off Ebay till you get it home.
No matter what, the tone on a Maple/Alder is what it is..... If your cool with a 2H Id get a Jackson new from a local place you can go an complain in the event the board sucks...

Thanks Bro.... I hear ya.... I'm the greatest unsung guitar setup king on the east coast!!!!!!!!!! At least in my own room!!!!  :D
just figured id throw it out for what its worth, Bro. Ive come to where I am as a player by having the balls to ask dumb questions and learn unabashedly, and I'm always a junkie for exchangin knowledge... that said, I don't wanna see somebody go down the Purchase path if its not thought out, IMHO. Did that at the shop, and always will. I'd rather lose 10 sales than give 1 potential customer a line of shit. Thats why I dont work guitar retail anymore!!!!!!!

Good advice man, definitly the truth. I played about 25 strats before I picked out my one, I was amazed at the difference between them. Jackson doesnt have the dealership weight around here though. The only music superstore we have doesnt carry Jacksons, and the local shops rarely do either! Ill have to track a few down, but at least I know they are worth persuing now!

I have an old, beat up RG550 I picked up years ago for $200 used. That guitar just has MOJO. Not sure if they all do, but this RG550 definitely does (more so than the RG560 and RG570 I had). I've also played a number of DK2Ms in local stores. Personally, I think my RG550 kills any of the DK2Ms that I've played.
