Hi, which Poweramp-Tubes prefer James Hetfield nowdays? Has he changed the EL34? In the Tuning Room i think he has SED 6550 which Peter don´t recommended. Hm so many guitar players use this type of tube and have no trouble with the VH4...

Who knows what tubes he is using?I could be anything.Actually he sticks with the stuff he trusts so is might be EL34.
But i read somwewhere here that i liked 6550.
Just try out and decide for yourself which tone you liked best and stick with it.
My VH4 has 6l6.It came stock with those tubes and i really like it.

I would love to try Sed 6550 but Peter doesen´t recommend it for the VH4 because the amp will get to hot with 40mA per tube
My english is horrible :D

I loved running 6550s in my VH4. Had zero issues with running them - sounded huge and mean.

FWIW, YMMV.

Ok, for 6550 i need other Tube Retainers. Is it difficult to put these Retainers in the Vh4?
Which Bias-Setting for SED 6550?
Thanks;)

All depends on the brand and the PV. I think I ran my =C= at 37.5mA

If you have to start butchering your chassis in order to accommodate the bottles, you have to ask yourself WHY are you so hellbent on putting different bottles in the amp?? It's not going to sound like Hetfield's amp - this I can guarantee you.

Peace,

James Hetfield uses cheap Sovtec 6650WE - at least, that's what I heard from Peter S. - and I tried them with the Hagen, VH4S and VH4. I Still have them in the VH4 mono. They seem to be a great choice for band rehearsals and gigs in smaller clubs imho but ymmv. :D :D

It's a pain in the ass !!!! You need to use a small 4-5mm socket in the chassis and unscrew the phillips head from the top.

I agree on this one. its a pain in the ass...but to me was worth an hour of testing my patience

Niilz, i thought Hetfield uses Svetlanas Winged C 6550 hmm... How would you describe the sound of the Sovteks 6550WE in the VH4 compared with JJ KT77? Which bias rating?

Hey Riffmaster - that's difficult, because you'd have to change your settings a lot to have comparable sounds w/ KT77 and 6550WEs.

With the WEs the VH4 becomes a lot clearer in the upper-midrange and a lot more present. So I'd dial the presence out (at least "3 hours less" on the presence-poti) and then give the amp "1 hour" more balls on the deep-poti. All in all it depends on your choice of speakers, but if you use vintage 30s, I think the 6550WEs are a clear winner...

To me, the JJ6l6 are really cold sounding tubes. Have you a clip with SED 6550?
