Do you all think the SL2 or SL2X gets authentic 80s JCM 800 tones? I LOVE old 800s but no longer own one. Anyone still own one to compare? I want to kill my JCM 800 50 watt head GAS! LOL...

sl2x cha is the closest...

I am guessing my EG3/4X and SL2X are capable of getting almost there....but I no longer have a Marshall.

A friend of mine has the Renegade and said the EG3/4X module is very, very similar to the Renegade. I think the Renegade is X'ed. LOL.

I have an '82 2204 and I just bought a Renegade head. I bought the Renegade because I think it's a more versatile JCM800. It's not a direct tone match but is close enough for me. I'm told the OD channel on the Renegade is based on the SL2. Not sure if that's the case or not.

I agree with that characterization of the Renegade. It's sort of like having a JCM800 and a Bassman in the same head.

Like the SL2 or SL2X? I heard the Renegade is more like the X. ;)

I'm not familiar with the Egnater modules so I couldn't say. I just read that about the SL2. I think Resonant Alien assessment of the Renegade being a cross between a Bassman and an 800 is pretty accurate. It's kinda like a darker 800 or a more aggressive Bassman.

I agree with this. The JCM800 is actually a pretty harsh amp unless the volume is up so high you go deaf. The x with a bright switch on 1 is probably pretty damn close.

Kind of like what I get with my Mod 50...a Marshall and Fender in one box. But, I do hear they modelled it after the X versions with the added upper mids.

Good point, a lot of such amps need to be cranked to get those great tones. I am thankful my VHT ST sounds great at 9:00 and above which is very reasonable and is becoming my new favorite amp.

I prefer having the Egnater with JCM and Plexi like modules rather than a real Plexi or JCM 800, since having the convenience of real Fender tones with another module is so worth it! That is what I love about my VHT as well, you get those great Marshall tones on channel two and some of the best clean tones I have ever heard on the clean channel.

Well,

I have a 2204 side by side with an M4 + RT2/50 and SL2X/SL with EW34s. (and a DSL 50 and a Diezel Einstein).
The Modules can get you pretty close to the sound of an JCM 800 soundwise.
But - it is Egnater. All this wonderful things are Egnater!
I play an Diezel-Einstein. Peter (Diezel) tweaked it a bit to a "Marshally" sound and it gets you close to a hotrodded Marshall soundwise. It is a wonderful Amp - but it is Diezel.
Even the DSL50 can't get me that close to a JCM 800.

In my opinion it is impossible to get especially the feel and dynamics of the JCM 800 out of another amp or a module (unless they are copys of an JCM, and there are good ones on the market). Marshalls are Marshalls, especially the older ones, they react unique to your playing, how you hit the strings, how you use the presence knob and especially the mids a.s.o. And they are loud!!!

Go straight to somebody owning a JCM 800 and plug in your guitar - you will immediately realize the difference.

Plus 1^7.

JCM800's sound like garbage to me at anything less than gig volume, a weakness that the Egnater stuff does not share. Although they sound kickass once you get the volume up.

When you say JCM 800 tones, what do you mean?
I find the 1959/1987, 2203/2204 and 2205/2210 very different sounding.

I think most people identify JCM800s w/ the 2203/2204 types of tone. At least I do :)

And that is unfortunate because the sound that everyone is used to hearing is usually a stock model that's cranked up, and/or processed in the studio. Or it's modded, tweaked to sound like the cranked up or processed recording.

It's always been my findings that being released later down the road, the 2205/2210 models were more refined, smoother, and were much more usable live than the 2203/2204 models. And this is probably because Marshall themselves were going after the sounds that everyone was recording to tape with cranked, processed, or modded 2203/2204's. The 2205/2210's are much easier to get a good live sound that matches what everyone was doing with the 2203/2204's in the studio.

Just like any Marshall freak, I've had dozens of heads, and it's always been hit or miss with 2203/2204 models.. Some were amazing from the first chord, others sounded like a cat getting sodomized. The 2205's and 2210's however, always sounded excellent from the start.

OK, I have always seemed to identifiy 2203/2204 with JMP's and 2205/2210 with JCM800's...

A good friend of mine has two JCM 800s, one single channel and one two channel. Not sure the models. Both sound great at bedroom levels.
