During the chorus in both of these songs, Jerry is playing simple open chords, but I've not been able to get that same sort of sound at all. The chords sustain and almost ring together as one if you know what I mean; especially when he plays something as simple as an open A or G, the sound is like a distorted orchestra.

Is it to do with the gear he's using? I think the Bogner Fish has about 7 preamp tubes and the JB is high output; that seems to explain the amount of sustain.

I also think that his sound in both of these is really mid heavy; JB bridge pickup, Bogner Fish preamp, Mosvalve power amp, Marshall cab w/ V30s; each piece of gear on its own has a noticeable mid emphasis.

Haaalp.

Big venues with good acoustics combined with loud amps.

not sure if he was using v30's or greenbacks back then

but what you're listening on big open chords is most likely chorus effect
he used a lot of chorus in a lot of songs, specially in the... wait for it... CHORUS parts

I was able to get close with the 2002 silver back bogner shiva I had with some chorus pedal on
he probably used a booster or overdrive here and there

I thought he had Bogner modded Marshalls in combination with the Fish preamp through another power section? After Facelift he had Bogner mod a few Marshalls chasing that Snorkler 4010 tone. When I saw them back in 93 he had Marshalls behind him.

^^^ For those who aren't familiar, the Snorkler was/is a Bogner modded JCM 800 4010 that was used for all or most of the tones you hear on Facelift. Mr C (Ronnie Champagne) chimed in here on RT a few yrs ago and talked about AIC and the Snorkler, he was a recording engineer on that album.

Man they sound great.

I'm going to go with godgrinder and say it's a mean amp turned up loud with the guitar somewhat close to the speakers and we're hearing some natural reverb from the room. I also hear a lot of overdrive/distortion on the guitar. Don't really hear a chorus sound.

Original Bogner Shiva (non-reverb) and/or Fish pre -> Marshall power amp.

It's just loud. And in a little room like that, there's mic bleed into the vox & drum mics that give a little ambience and the room acoustics, etc. I don't hear any PA processing going on. The first one sounds like they might have gone back and sweetened it a little (?)

I seen AIC back in 2014 and his Friedman JJ's sounded absolutely awesome and I feel they replicated his Snorkler tone with a lot more massive lowend. It was one of the best all around sounding concerts I have ever been to, you could hear everything and no one over powered anyone else in the mix. All the other people that went also said the same thing so I wasn't just hearing things.
And between us all we've been to a lot of shows. Like earlier said and Marshall with a splash of Bogner there you go.

Check out GregM's Youtube clips in the clips section to hear the JJ in classic AIC mixes. I'm not a Friedman fanboy but the JJ sounds awesome to my ears. Maybe the Helios might get there as well but the JJ definitely can then some.

If you can find the YT clip they were on David Lettermen or one of the other late night shows around 92/93/94 and he had JCM800 and JCM 900 heads a whole lot of them and they sounded great they may have been Bogner modded who knows.

Here the JJ Maybe someone can embed this.

I also saw them in 14 and he sounded killer, definitely shades of his earlier tone.

I saw them a few years back when he was using the pair of Marshas, I think. Sounded a bit muddy/mushy, but it might have been the venue because Mastodon sounded awful, just a wall of noise.

For Junkhead in 1992 he used a Ernie Ball Music Man that Eddie gave him. He had a rack with a Bogner modded Fish. Dos Valve 500 Intelliverb and a BBE sonic maximizer.

For that 1990 show he played his 84 Rampage and I am almost 100% sure he was using a Randall tube head 100 watt.

Proves tone is in the hands.

Before anyone calls BS on my Randall post. You can see the head he plays through at this show, three months earlier in 1990.

Edited to add in 92 he used 4 4x12 Marshall. Two were loaded with v30s and the other two were greenbacks.

I always thought that was a Randall RG100ES solid state head.

I find it fascinating how much the brain can take over here. At first listen, I don't hear a tone difference between the record and the 1990 live performance at all. For the first song, I hear the guitar tone in my head, not what's actually happening. Alice in Chains is my favorite band, so I'm wired to hear it they way I always have. My brain fills in what's different or missing, at least for a time. By the time they get to "Real Thing", the 3rd song in, the tone difference is VERY apparent. Up to that point, it doesn't bother me at all.

I love that bootleg so much. I've got an audio-only version on my phone, listen to it all the time. The version of Junkhead from the OP is one of the better bootlegs from that era.

There are several videos from the Facelift era writing/practice sessions where you can see what look like RG100ES full and half stacks. I bought one last year when I was on a Dimebag kick and haven't spent much time with it, would be interesting to plug a Rampage in and play around with some Alice stuff.

Thats so 90's ...

I find it odd that Staley, Cobain & Weiland all had the world by the balls & couldn't survive.

Sure made some good music.

There was a thread a while back but we confirmed it was the tube 100 watt Randall not solid state. 100% sure.
