Jimmy Page tone?

Hey guys,

Any of you have an opinion on a good module for Page tone? We have been breaking out a lot of Zep covers lately and I am trying to find the right tone. I know a lot has to do with his fingers and old amps, etc but I am trying to get close. I have been playing around with the Bassman and SL2 plus I have the BB Preamp. I am betting the SL would be a good pick.

Thanks.

Which Page tone? He had so many over the years. To do a middle of the road approach to his sound, I would start with an SL and flavor with pedals from there. You would also need a guitar capable of those out of phase and single coil tele tones--or his pickup wiring scheme in an LP.

To me you could get there several different ways. SL and a BB should be plenty of tools and in my opinion you don't really need a ton of different pickup switching like he has to get a good representation. I would focus more on the playing style and the speakers. Page's tone is a "speaker break up" type of sound best obtained with some sort of Green Back style cones. Just my $0.02.

3 Mile, have you compared the BB Preamp to the Fulltone OCD? I also was interested in the Love Pedal Provalve and Precision Drive before getting the BB.

I am not going to go crazy trying to get the right guitar/pickups, etc. I have two LPs, an SG and a PRS CE-22 with the 5 way switch which includes series/parallel switching. I mostly use my LPs and I know Page used mostly LPs live even for the songs recorded with a Tele. I personally don't think it needs to be exact since we are not a Led Zepp tribute band.

I am getting some decent tones with the Bassman, BB, SL2 and EG3/4. Don't know if I will buy the SL - but it is on the list. ;) What would the SL give me over the SL2 channel A with the gain rolled back?

Which of his songs use those out of phase and single coil tele tones the most? We are messing with Heartbreaker, Over the Hills, The Wanton song Ramble On, and Bring it on Home.
I was working on Heartbreaker last night and is one of my favorite Page tones.

I hear guys mention the OCD and John mentions the Precision Drive a lot, but I think those are more amp like gain. The Egnater is an amp so it seems the BB that I have would be the better bet. Maybe the OCD or something like the Love Pedal would be best into a clean amp. Another thoughts was the Creation audio Labs pedal that basically just adds gain/drive, etc...but I like the flavor the BB adds and personally think it sounds like an extension of the Egnater which isn't always easy to achieve with any amp.

I had an OCD and while it is good I think teh BB is just the best driv emade so far for Egnater. Just seems to work. I think teh OCD ha smore bight and is less natural sounding.

The SL2 should probably do the job, I've wnaked away on Page licks with my EG3/4 also, I thought it sounded sufficient to get away with it too.

I use the SL on channel A for clean on "since ive been loving you" then hit ch B or the SL2 CH A for the raunchy lead. He used Orange, JTM, Plexi, Bassman and many more. LOL Its hard to play his choppy hard staggering lead playing due to him not being able to play it smoothly thus the awesome Page leads. He was in an interview years ago talking about his style was from him trying to play and having a hard time doing it. WOW I have a Page style of playing

The B channel of the T/D works nicely for 10 Years Gone, with the gain up and working the guitars volume control.

I agree with moodrock, Pages tone differs song to song let alone different albums.
I always thought that was coolest thing about him.

Also a perk of being a Rock Star. The liberty to own and use lots of gear.

Sometimes I wonder how useful it would be to use a Jimmy Page wiring scheme although I doubt most people notice. I have a PRS CE-22 with series/parallel switching which gets a nice variety so I might give that a whirl. The closest I have are the SL2, EG3/4 and BMan, but no SL. Best I have found is chanel A of the SL2 and just vary the gain for the song. We were even playing some Rush off 2112 using the Bassman and SL2 channel A and it worked well.
I still haven't found a ton of uses for the BB pedal but we'll see.
An SL would be nice to have.

Page frequently used out of phase pickups to create his tones. Rolling off the tone knob with out of phase pickups creates very interesting textures. Considering he recorded alot of stuff on a Tele, having the ability to split to single coil and out of phase will go along way to covering alot of his stuff. I had a les paul with that wiring scheme in it and I really liked the flexibility. The VX module I think would get you the closest to a middle of road Page sound since that mod is so versatile.

We played Heartbreaker - the Bassman with the BB sounded killer! In fact, the Bassman and BB sound great for lots of Rush and Led Zep.

Funny thing is, I accidentally had the BB on while playing the Erect at one point and I didn't have noise or feedback issues as expected.

Hey guys, sorry to bring this up again. Anyone know exactly what effects Jimmy Page is using on the Wanton Song? It sounds like a very watery chorus or vibe or something. You hear it when he is playing some chords in the chorus and the lead.
