This album has probably my favorite modded jmp rhythm tones. Assuming Norum/Billy White were using Marshalls, anyone know any details? Besides having Michael Waegner producing of course!

Yep..I beleive both John used an old Marshall with a Marshall G'venor distortion pedal in front of it. I don't think there was any awsome modded amp used. I also love the tone on that album and years ago had Mark mod a plexi to the exact tone of that album......it is a yummmy amp! However over the years with good times and bad I have sold it it my best friend who loves to remind me what an awsome amp it is....

Hey Tim,
I hope your not talking about me? Let me go play that great amp that you made the mistake of selling me. LOL....

That is awesome tone. I loved that Mirror Mirror song and never knew of Norum at the time. The 78 JMP Cameron I bought off of screamindemon was originally a Norum mod and updated to an Aldrich. The inside of the chasis still says in Mark Cameron marker John Norum Mod. Bottom line it sounds awesome.

I have a John Norum interview somewhere from back in the 90s, and John mentions that both him and Billy took a bunch of marshalls to Jose Arredondo a few months before they went into the studio to record that album. I'm pretty sure he said they had 4 jose modded marshalls each during that tour too.

Cool Dan...Love the tones on that album - one of my favs.

Mike

Cool replies. I can get real close with my Cornford, but Im thinking about tweaking my plexi for another flavor...maybe I'll try a Govnor pedal first!

Interesting....I would have NEVER guessed a Soldano in there...but a boost in the clean channel I could see it as it was less pukey in the mids.. Both of the Soldano's I owned had an unbearable honky mid frequency on the dirty channel that I couldnt get rid of....and I love thick mids...The Mirror Mirror tone sounds a LOT like a '76 4 holer a friend of mine has...but he wont sell it to me...bastard.

Those Jose's sounded like shit...on the tour...and... I think the CD....John and Billy used a SLO or HR50 with a G'venor pedal in the clean(like Gary Moore used) and his....now mine....Arvidson guitar...the Mirror Mirror solo is Johns old Hiwatt that someone had stolen some time right after he recorded that solo...this was the frist solo he did for that CD.....Don's old Lee Jackson 69 modded Marshall Im sure is in the mix too.

Hey Mark

Thanks a lot for clearing that up! I honestly thought after reading up, that they had used the Jose's on the CD.. never woulda guessed a Soldano with a guvnor pedal ran the Gary Moore way!! I havent had a chance to try that method before.. maybe its worth givin it a go, as i do love that tone that they were gettin on the Up From The Ashes CD!

Cheers!

Hello everyone, first post here. I just stumbled across this forum as I was trying to find more info on this very subject, as I'm currently working on a song heavily influenced by this album. And now I'm more confused than ever. I've read other information (don't ask me where, I don't remember) that a Marshall JCM800 loaded with KT88 power tubes was used on the album. (?) I'm struggling to get close to that tone, especially since I'm having to use amp-sims (yeah yeah...I know). But it's getting closer...just not quite there yet. So...Soldano...or Marshall on the album (distorted rhythm tones)?

If anyone is interested in hearing the song, I'll post a link. Although the mix is a LONG way from being finished.

Thanks for all the info on here everyone!

One of the best rock sounds on a recording IMO. Love that cd.

Wasn't John Norum the guitarist for Europe?
