In these days I've Face the truth CD in my car and I love this album and the way how John solos is very aggressive/technical and melodic, the guitar sound is amazing, but I dont' remember what gear he used(guitars amps effects)? Is it possible Cameron modded marshall??
Thanks Bye

Are sure Dan? the Jose have this amount of bass? I've always thinking that Jose mod was on the bright side like a good marshall with more gain and aggressive, but in the album there are also a lot of mids and punch like a mix of Mesa but with marshall mids and vibe!! The cab it seems a Vintage 30 not?
I really love this album and also Another destination LP !!
Bye Matte

I thought that I read it was a Cameron, perhaps what became the Aldrich?

Mark Cameron actually was the person who told me it was a Jose Arredondo modded Marshall on the record. It is definitely not a Cameron on 'Face The Truth'.. He only started using Cameron stuff on 'Another Destination', which sounds totally different to the 'Face The Truth' tone.

Real deal Jose mods sound beefy as hell. This should give you an idea, here's a real Jose Arredondo mod that Mike Fortin owns...

Wow. This is great info. I absolutely love that album. In my opinion it is Norum at his best.

So assuming that you had a ton of money to throw at getting an amp. How would you even find a real Jose? Would one just lurk on e-bay in hopes of seeing one go up?

A real deal original Jose modded Marshall will cost you an insane amount of money these days. And what's more, to get that tone you need to know which Jose mod to find too. There's a higher gain mod that he did back in the day for guys like John Norum, John Sykes, Doug Aldrich, Mick Mars etc. It's a lot higher gain than the other mods he used to do, and is harder to find.

If you want that sound, find a Marshall and send it over to me. I know that specific Jose Mod and can replicate it no problem.

Oh REALLY?!? Is this different than the Killer Kali mod that you do?

Would you be able to use my Friedman Naked as a donor amp (I believe that it is based off a JMP)?

We have actually spoken recently about doing an orange rock monster mod.

Yup it's a lot different to the Killer Kali Mod that i do. Sure i could use that amp as a donor for the mod. I'll send you a PM tonight

I thought the amp used on that recording was a Marshall JCM800 2205 (or so I was told by someone connected to Norum), I thought that represented the first year he began using them. It was not a Cameron amp. If it was a Jose mod, that would certainly sound like one to take Dan up on.

My favorite Norum album, he really went for a full Sykes vibe on that one. Love the tone, love Sykes Jose tone as well.

According to Mark Cameron, John used a Jose Arredondo modded Marshall on the album.

However, John had actually been using Soldano heads live around that time and also during the touring of the Don Dokken 'Up From The Ashes' album. He was on a major Gary Moore kick back then. He would use the Crunch channel of the Soldano and boost it with a Marshall Guvnor pedal... Just like Gary did.

Also take a look at the front cover photo of 'Face The Truth' and then look at Gary Moore's Run For Cover album haha. Think he was just a bit inspired or what? He even got Glenn Hughes on Vocals, just like Gary did on Run For Cover :D

Great info... that little guvnor pedal is spoken off often, is it the mystery sauce! I do find myself also gravitating towards an OD of some type to put hair on my chest when the amp doesn't do it alone. Often prefer that to super high gain channels. There is one locally for 125$. Considering he started at 225$, we'll see how low it goes!

Because of this thread I've been youtubing some of the tunes from this album...not one I was familiar with. Great playing and tone for sure

 I was thinking of his album after that. Thanks for sharing the info.

Also a big help to the sound of the album, in therm of punch, is given by the D tuning and a lot of les Paul!!

You mean on the Another Destination CD right?

It's all in standard tuning on Face The Truth and most of it was done with his Arvidsson Superstrat from what I understand. You can hear whammy bar dives and singlecoil neck pickup tones on almost every track.

What type of pickups was he rocking in his strats back in the day? Always use to see humbuckers in some of his strats. Always wondered what they might have been Super Distortions?

What about this one ;)

Looks familiar lol, not sure who took his pic first btw
