...they just have it. When these players grab a note, you can friggin' feel it in your balls! It all comes down to vibrato and bends.

There are more technically proficient players out there who, on the other hand, don't have that kind of touch to the strings.

Some examples:

Yngwie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcfYlOIPKg4 Listen to the first note at 0:42!

Sykes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZT99jg1CLRg Some damn fine playing and singing there.

Moore http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4O_YMLDvvnw Very nice playing and singing.

I prefer Yngwie's music and playing. I also like Yngwie's vibrato a lot more than Guthrie's. But each to his own...

Petrucci > Hammett

+ a lot

Yngwie has a limited bag of tricks. Guthrie has a very deep bag.

Why are you guys talking about Guthrie? He wasn't even mentioned.

+1 compared guthrie to yngwie is really stupid imo

two totally different players

plus yngwie created a style on electric guitar, not sure guthrie.

both awesome players for sure.

There is a certain ballsyness to all those guys especially Moore and Sykes that always seems to blow my mind.

I agree. Most modern shredders even though technically brilliant don't get me in the gut at all and GM did that with the first time I heard the intro solo to End Of The World in 1983. I think the guys who retain that roaring marshall, type bite I'll always like but all the guys who have the liquid, smooth, neck pickup thing all the time just bore me to tears.

GM doing some fierce fusion

...and some awesome hard rock

I've never heard a strat sound as big, except for maybe Jimi.

That's strange, isn't it. It's like if someone mentions Yngwie, there'll be posts that this and this player's better than him. He's still in the biz and going strong unlike some washed up former guitar "gods". That's great, IMO. Yngwie created a whole new genre, took rock guitar playing to virtuocity level and sent whole generation of guitarists back to woodshed.

And finally, if we start comparing Yngwie and GG: according to the Guthrie clips I've heard, Yngwie's touch on single notes (vibrato, feel) is better than GG's. But hey, that's just me and some people agree or disagree. Original meaning of the thread was about players' "touch" on the strings afterall and these 3 players, mentioned in the title, came to my mind immediately...

Guthrie is probably one of the best guitarists out today but you really can't say anyone is better then another. It's always going to be a matter of opinion. Its like saying Purple is the best color. (Which it is :D )
As Ed Degenaro once said, there is room for all of us to play!!
Now with that said, The Guthrie > Yngwie theory is high subjective. I won't go into how I hate > thread but I will say this. Yngwie created a whole genre of music and he created a Style of music. Guthrie has not. Guthrie is an amalgamation of many styles put together but not one style he plays is of his own creation IMHO. You really have to give credit where credit is due. Yngwie might not be your favorite player but he is extremely unique. Guthrie is unique in that he can play many styles incredibly well, but I think a majority of his lick can be traced back to other guitar players (yngwies can be traced back to violinists ; )

That's just my thinking on the subject and I have to mention that Guthrie is one of my favorite players of all time,

Where GG has gone career wise is very odd, the man has so much talent it is not funny but his cd sales are in the dirt and I have no idea why. I sucked up my pride and spent the near $30 to get it and it is one incredible CD to say the least. I also really dig his Creative Guitar instruction books, well written and killer exercises.

That said I cannot say one bad thing about Yngwie, the man just brings so much pain it is not even funny. He created the Neo-classical scene and from what I heard the guys in LA were shitting a brick went he came over.......nobody touched what he was doing.

Sykes had imo the best tone of all the 80s and that monster vibrato just kills.

  I guess my standard HCAF troll attempt flew over everyone's heads?

It's common knowledge that Kirk Hampster is better than all other guitarists Tommy.

because the average joe/josephine-Q CD buyer is not impressed with 'licks' ...they want something they can put into their CD/mp3 player and connect with emotionally or spiritually... on a basis that transcends sheer musical ability or even brilliance. That's why the Kurt Cobains will always outsell the Guthrie Govans...if your 'goal' as a musician is to sell a bunch of 'product' and play the poparazzi game then becoming an outstanding musician is not the quickest or smartest route.
