Live in Manila, Schon and the band sound great, Arnel has pretty good stage presence but I'm a bit on the fence with his singing.

Watching it too. I have noticed that Schon has floyds on his Les Pauls. Is this sacrilge? Actually it is the only way I could play an LP. I have always had floyds or fender style trems. I cannot speed pick/palm mute on a fixed bridge. I have tried, has something to do with how I rest my palm, goddamn frustating. Really like LP's and wish I did not have that problem :poke: I wonder how Fr's affect tone?

He's nearly always had floyds on his LPs. That Zematis on "Wheel in the Sky" sounded killer. He's used a strat now, and probably will use his Schon custom guitar and maybe a PRS too.

So what's the consensus on the tonal difference between LP vs fixed?

they sound great---thanks for the heads up!
i can't get beyond someone's comment here about being bug eyed and leaping around though!

I love Neal...has always been one of my favs, and I've always liked Ross in Journey as well. Deen has a killer voice and is a solid drummer but I've hated Johnathan Cain since the guy joined. He's boring, and looks utterly bored to death onstage, especially on this concert. Escape was a fantastic album but the longer Cain was in Journey the more they became watered down.

As for Arnell...there's times if I close my eye's that I like him but overall...it's almost like Journey became a cover band of themselves and I cannot watch the guy...annoying. I liked Augeri more...personally.

I've seen every version of Journey w/ lead singers...and other than Perry I loved Soto with them. And here's why. He was the first person that didn't sound or was trying to copy Perry. It's as if Journey's songs had new life and the guy was a heckuva a performer. Oh well...I doubt many will agree with me. I'll say this I ws lucky to see Journey with Perry on the tour they were recording Captured...one of my first concerts and they absolutely smoked...they never quite sounded right after Rollie left...to me at least.

I'm watching as well. David Gilmour was on earlier and it was awesome. There showing nothing but concerts all weekend. Journey sounds great as well. Always dug Schon's playing and tone. He's using a G-System too!

yeah is tone is crushing!
Arnie needs to wear sunglasses

I saw him with soto in soul sirkus and it was not great
they sorta looked fruity and neals diesels were buried in verb
soto with malmsteen was killer

Speaking of journey
zachman is at a lee ritenour show tonight with a personal invite from lee.
Seems lee caught their journey tribute show a while back and really dug "the guitar player"
Expecting a full report!
Also noticed Heart concert doing whole Steamboat Annie record
later and Keith Urban/John Mayer together jamming next week!

Palladia is cool!

So far tonight Schon has been pretty basic with guitars. A couple floyded pauls, strat, zematis (I'm pretty sure) once, and that's it. He's really on, smooth and quick, sounds killer. I'd pay for a ticket to this show. Arnel sounds good, but on a couple tunes it's like he's trying just a bit too hard.

I believe that was released in October of 2009, not sure when it was actually recorded, but much eariler than that I'm sure.

A lot has changed in Neal's rig since then. He's pretty much moved on from his Gibson's and he's back w/PRS. Plus it's rumored he's working with Fernandes to bring his old Schon ( Jackson ) back to the market ....

And I'm not sure what he's using as far as amps, but he's incorporated the Axe-Fx into his rig as well ....

I found his voice started grating on me. It's weird. It's so close to Perry but he doesn't have a certain "sweetness" to his tone that Perry had. It makes me miss Perry more. They need a good singer with range with his own tonality. They do sound like they're their own cover band.

one thing to remember is perry was very cogniscent about producing his voice with mics and outboard gear.
i'm thinking that given the proper signal processing, you could make pineda and perry indistinguishable tonally.
airy mic ala neumann ksm 105, warm mic pre/compressor or plug, and dynamic lexicon verb/ tc 2290 delay.

the question would be, since it's neal's band, would he open to creating the proper stage environment/mix to allow for that.
steve perry's journey was about his voice.

I think you nailed it, there was a sweetness with Perry's voice that Arnel just doesn't have. Either way I thought it was a good show, the band sounded great, the drummer sang really well too.

I disagree here...nobody but can reproduce Perry. The thing about Perry that people hardly mention is that his voice was changing with each Journey album...either subtle or obvious by the end...but it always had Steve's essence/inflections/stylings that can never be reproduced. Just from Infinity to Departure...Steve's voiced changed. By Escape is was very different and probably overall the best he sounded. By the last Perry Journey album it was a very different Perry...but still very much Steve.

I personally think that Neal and Cain have accepted the bands fate and are content in just trying to rehash old school Journey...and there is not one thing wrong with that...it's their history and they can do what they want. It's like people ripping on Kiss...but they've earned the right to keep dishing it out if people are buying it.

My point with Soto was that he brought a very modern...obviously non Perry factor to the band. And to me...it worked.

But I agree with Herbie Herbert here...why not just get Kevin Chalfant if staying the Perry clone route.

I do wish Neal would get Greg Rollie back into the band to go along with Cain. Alot of the classic sound of Journey both musically and vocally was Rollie mixing with Perry.

Btw/ here's a great read if your a Journey fan...
