Which pretty much applies to most in here...

I've noticed this for awhile, but since recently getting rid of my GT8 and going back to using the three channels on my JSX, i notice that my clean channel is insanely louder than my Crunch and Ultra channels.

Last night for example my levels were:

Clean
Vol - 3

Crunch
Vol - 7
Gain - 7

Ultra
Vol - 8
Gain - 5

I use the crunch for my main tone, and Ultra as my lead channel as I dont have a boost, yet. ;)

My master volume was on about 2.5 - 3.5 throughout the night and it was good enough for me to hear myself.

I'm curious if there is an issue with the amp that the clean is so much louder, of if its just nature of this amp or amps in general that are three channels.

clean just cuts better, an acoustic guitar can really stand out in a mix

There isn't an issue with the amp, mine is that way also. The JSX has active EQ controls on the Crunch and Ultra channels (clean is passive). This means that the EQ controls can either boost or cut the frequency. Anything over 5 is boosting the frequency, anything below 5 is cutting the frequency. Most amps (and the clean channel on the JSX) are passive EQ controls where you can only cut the frequency. Therefore, running the EQ controls higher may minimize the discrepency between the gain channels and the clean channel (although it may or may not give you the tone you want). Frankly, I never had an issue with running my clean volume at 11:00 and my Gain channel volumes significantly higher to find a consistent level amongst all the channels.

I don't know if I'd agree with either of these responses. I had the JSX for a little of a year and used it at home, band practice, gigs and never had my channel levels at differences THAT drastic. Then again I almost always ran my MV at noon

well I've tried several different channel volume/master volume combinations. Running the channels higher and using the master as a true master, I've tried using the Master around 7 or 8 and using the channel volumes lower. I like the sound of the first setup. I tend to like my channel volumes around 7-8ish. The tone seems to change a bit when it gets to that point. I mentioned my gain settings already for the channels, my eq settings are around Crunch - b:6 m:6.5 t:6, Ultra - b:7 m:6 t:6. I understand the active/passive eq deal. When I ran my GT8, I had the effects loop of the GT set so there was a volume drop and that allowed me to raise my master to around 6-7. But my stage volume was still the same as it is now.

Does what the effects loop send/return levels matter? I have been running them at the 'unity' gain thing. I believe about 3 on the send and 7 on the return. I'm only running into the Ch2 of an ISP Decimator Rack in my loop for now, no other effects. Could this be affecting it? Should I just dime both?

Yo J! I'd like to check out that EQ you have for sale. Are you going to be in GB any time soon?

The clean channel is louder because the two lead channels are a touch on the compressed side (which I like). If you run the low gain input it evens this out quite a bit but honestly I don't have much of an issue with it. I still am running the gt8 with mine and recently started using the cleans from the gt8 since I can pretty much nail the JSX clean and can now use my two lead channels with channel switching.

The send and return dials play a pretty big role in preformance of the JSX. I run mine at send 8, return 2 (unity). My loop is always on as well, it adds clarity to the gain channels for some reason.
I myself run my master volume at 10 and have my crunch and ultra channel volumes on 2-3. My clean channel volume is approximatly at 1 I like this setup because the girth in tone is unmatched with the master dimed. Also, I don't like having the gain channel volumes above 4 because the preamp starts to get too noisy.
I notice my clean channel is loud, but my master is set high too, so.....
You could try a preamp tube that isn't quite as hot as the current one in the V1 spot.

I will definately try the "dimed' master and see if that helps and also adjust my FX loop levels for a more send volume.

We are playing a bigger room this weekend so I will be able to turn it up a bit more this weekend.

Fratello's in Oshkosh for all the WI'ites.

I definately like the tone better with the master dimed. Played this way at a few shows and it definately adds some clarity and bite to the voicing.

I'm now looking for a way to make the crunch/ultra channels a little less compressed. Wondering if there is a preamp tube swap that I can do that will help make this achievable?

Kid, what brand of tube do you currently have in the preamp's V2 spot?

I have never changed the preamp tubes, so its whatever the stock is.

Depending on production date they will be either Electro Harmonix or JJ's. Both of these work great in the JSX, and I don't think they are the reason for compression on the gain channels. That is just a natural factor of the preamp's voicing.
