"Jumping" the FX loop?

I was reading a discussion on another board about whether or not 'jumping' the fx loop in an amp (completing the loop with a patch cable) would affect the tone of an amp. I do know that when I used to run an EQ in my loop, I could definitely give the amp a significant volume boost, but I stopped doing that because it was inconvenient for me to run all those cords playing live.

I'm curious if completing the loop in such a way would affect the tone, volume, etc. of the amp. I will give it a try as soon as I'm able to...just wondering if anyone's done it?

Maybe if you'd use a very long cord?Or bad quality?Or both?

Not quite sure what you're getting at there. Why would you use a bad cord?

I guess that by using a very long or low quality or a long, low quality cord in the feedbackloop will give a change in tone.
That`s what i ment to say.

It really depends on which amp you're using. Some amps have gain controls for the loop, some use tubes for the loop and some use op-amps for the loop, so probably most amps will have a sound change when jumping the loop. It would take less time to try it than to type a post. ;)

But, certainly let us know which amp and your results.

Very true lol. I will be trying Saturday with my Rebel 30 head, so I'll let you know what happens.

Hmmm.

Just looking at the tube chart for the 30, I wouldn't expect any change when jumping the loop, because V4, used for the loop send and return, is also in the circuit without using the loop. But you have the amp, so try it and let us know. :checkthisout:

i do it in my tourmaster. it's a built in tube generated effect loop.

i set it for boost.

and the tube i use in there is a 12bz7...and it certainly, without question sounds a tad hotter, even when the levels are set to match. my old guitarist is questionably "tone" deaf (not in the traditional sense, he just used a marshall mode 4 and thought it was the greatest...= tone deaf LOL) and he even picked out the 12bz7 as opposed to a few other 12ax7s in a blind test.

That's a great observation. I didn't even consider it.

That being said, I gave it a go and, as you predicted, I didn't notice any change in the amp. Oh well...nothing ventured, nothing gained!

does that amp you're using have an "effects on/off" switch on the pedal board for the amp?

i just set my loop effects on top of my amp, then use the loop controller.

i know that sounds obvious, but it may be something you overlooked since you said you were tired of all the long cords.
