Just Checked Out This Marshall JVM Demo And...

I have been thinking about picking up a Marshall JVM410H for a while. This demo posted earlier today seems to be one of the best I've heard. Seems like he knows how to set the amp up and uses a reasonable and tasteful amount of gain. In any case, I think he presents the amp well and does a good job of showcasing it's capabilities and versatility instead of just pushing the gain or boosting the hell out of it.

They're versatile as hell. Clean to mean and everything in between.
I remember the loop level being weird though. I had to get a level converter for -10 to +4.

Yup, versatile as heck.

Only issue is noise on some units, for which there's a mod out there.

Honestly, I own a few Marshalls and a couple Marshall-like amps; but I only need my JVM410H to cover my favorite Marshall sounds; IMO, you need to open up the power amp to make it sound its best; which I do on all my MV Marshalls.

It's not going to be better than the original amp, but it's close enough for me; and it covers a wide range of classic Marshalls. I'm sure in a mix you're not going to notice the difference in the sound.

Sure seems like it, I know it's not an especially favored amp her at the board...Have you ever tried the "Plexi Trick" he demonstrated at the conclusion of the video? The tone really did seem to resemble that classic Lynch / Jake E Lee sound...at least to my ears.

No, I haven't tried this on OD2. I'll have to give it a try.

I like how I have things organized: Clean - Crunch (rock rhythms - '70s) - OD1 ( hair/thrash rhythm tones - '80s) - OD2 (high gain smooth/compressed leads).

He got some perfectly fine Marshall tones in that vid but every time I played a 410 it just left me cold. I could try to go into the nuances of the midrange or feel under the fingers but after years of playing older Marshall's it just lacks something. Certain way it compresses or the low end response. I did play a 210 one time that sounded pretty good but that was through an EVH cab. I actually was buying the cab and used the Marshall to check it out. I would take a 6 knobber and a couple of pedals every day over the 410.
That being said I thought the tone he got at the end on CH 4 with the gain real low was pretty nice.

My JVM "blew my mind" as well, when in under a year it failed. Now I list the amp under "POS".
Generic Clean, the other 2 modes add more volume and mud.
Crunch channel- useless, just like the DSL.
OD1 Orange was best
OD2 sucked. They moved the midrange and not to a good place. Never again. Same with the JEL20. Turned out to be a POS as well.

Meh... I get the attraction of all the different tones and switching options, but the overall tone here just sounds kind of "cardboardy" and lacking in any kind of sparkle or punch, which has been my experience when trying these out.
These and the DSL's kinda fall into the same boat for me. They sound OK at first and are versatile, but when you start to A/B them with other amps, they just don't sound that great.... the Vintage Modern is the same deal.....
I think there are much better options available these days in that price bracket.
Any of the EVH 5153's, or even the Iconic, would seem to be a better choice, at least to my ears.

I had one, and as somebody already said, you need to get the power tubes cooking for it to shine.

Yeah...They are trading around $1,000 - $1,200 locally. Hard to go wrong at that price.

Yea as I was listening to the guys demo, I couldn’t help but wonder what other 100W amp would be in that range…no good clear answers I don’t think

I’ll jump in here as someone who has owned a JVM twice.

It really is a versatile amp and hard to beat given the used prices.

Killertone posted some great clips over at the JVM forum eons ago that were epic. One was thrashy AF and the other was an awesome blend with an Engl Blackmore.

Blake has a YT vid where he makes it sound a lot like his boosted JMP and 800 tones.

That being said, I’m happier with my Mojotone 800. I find myself tweaking much less and playing much more. In the room, a boosted 800 just has that little extra magic sauce.

But, if you need a dedicated clean channel and FX loop, JVM all the way.
