I just got my Herbert, and now I am looking at all my cabs and am wondering if another might be a better option. It has been a really long time since I have used anything other than v30's. I currently use Mesa cabs with v30's. what in your opinion is the best cab/speaker?

...I am kinda hoping some will suggest the v30's so I can just get on with it and not worry about cabs anymore LOL

I think v30s are great but with Herbert I prefer g12k100s or a mix of the two.

Hmmm. A mix sounds interesting. I have always just ignored the idea before before because I only really care what the amp sounds like through a mic, either on stage or in the studio and I only mic one speaker at a time.

Come to think of it, this would give me a second tone option.

Some like the V30's and others like the K100's or a mix or... It's all personal preference. I like either the K100's or EVM12L's. I don't really like V30's myself.

Diezel amps usually work well with V30 speakers however it depends a lot on the given cabinet. The Herbert delivers a lot of low mids and lows which doesn't match well with oversized cabinets (i.e. Mesa Rectifier Standard). In my opinion you need a cabinet that can handle the low end well and delivers a good midrange.

Diezel 4x12 front loaded w mix of v30s/k100s is a tasty setup.

yeah the v30s are cool but i really have it out for mesa cabs. i really really dont like how they sound.

Can you elaborate a little about what exactly you didn't like. I do notice huge differences between our Mesa cabs, some being more midrangey full and smooth with a decent bottom and others being more strident with a hugely scooped mid and weak bottom in comparison. All of our cabs are loaded with v30's. we have some standard size cabs and a couple larger ones. The larger ones are the ones that seem to give me the most problems.

Well I guess my ears are alittle spoiled.... Mesa cabs are upper middle of the road cabs but they are not high end cabs like Diezel or even the Engl pro cabs or xxls. Mesa's are too loose for me. Especially the over sized ones. I hear alot of standing waves from them and they are pretty directional. They are by far not the worse cabs ever built but they aren't anything special IMO. The resonance of a mesa cab doesn't ever do it for me. They are either completely dead or they are too lively and you get a wobbly sound. I agree with you about the smaller one's sounding better. Plug your herbert into a diezel front loaded cab and you will never want another cab ever again lol.

I just don't understand how directionally different 4x12 cabs can be. How different can the construction of all cabs really be? I do not contest that there are HUGE differences in the sound, I just don't know why. I mean its the same damn speaker and pretty much the same shaped box holding it. What gives?!?

Different woods, sometimes there are baffles, inserts, different kinds of foams, quality of wood, how the cab is joined together has an impact on it. there are many variables that have an audible difference.

Recently A/B'd a few cabs. Tried mainly Bogner and Diezel, as I like those brands best. I played 4x12 cabs; front- and rearloaded. I ended up taking a rearloaded Bogner Ubercab home with me. I liked the Diezels for very hard rock / metal stuff. They seem to sound a bit "meaner" to my ears. I liked the V30s best in all cabs and in the end decided that I also like the way the V30s mix with the GT75s. Also, I thought that the Bogner cabs sounded a bit more balanced. The Diezel cabs were awesome as well! Just voiced different, IMHO.

Settled on a rearloaded cab as I like that "feel" of tone better. Less in your face; I play mainly rock music (not very much drop tuning, etc). I can imagine for metal / something more aggressive a frontloaded would add a little edge to the sound.

Oh, I played the cabs through Herbert and Einstein and a Soldano Hot Rod.

It tested a lot of different cabinets and speakers during the last years with my Diezel amps (Herbert, VH4, Hagen). The Diezel frontloaded 4x12 cabinet (with V30 or G12K100) sounds good when played alone but was totally lost in the mix with both of my bands. The Diezel rearloaded 4x12 works much better in that regard but was too dark and boomy especially with V30s. However I played that cabinet for some time with a mix of V30s and EVM12Ls. That made everyting a lot tighter but in the end it still wasn't organic and cutting enough for me. I know a lot of people might disagree but in my experience the Diezel cabinets aren't the best choice for the Diezel amps. I really wanted to like them but it din't work out unfortunatly.

Lately I've been playing a Zilla 4x12 cabinet loaded with V30 + G12M65. That combination is tight, defined, organic, clear and fast and sits perfectly in the band mix. It is like somebody lifted a blanket from the amp and moved the midrange to were it needs to sit. I can hear myself a lot better now and as a result feel more comfortable while playing. I couldn't be more happy.

Just my two cents :)

I can definitely hear and understand the tonal differences, tightness issues of different cabs with the same speakers, but I have not found anything showing a directional difference between any cabs really. They all seem to have an on axis directionality that is identical, and emit hemispherically until the schroeder frequency of that specific cab design.

Are you saying that the on axis dispersion is wider on different cabs?
