Hey all, pretty new to this board (but a long time member of HC). I just sold my MESA Dual Rectifier (been playing them for about ten years), because I wanted to upgrade my rig. Been playing with some national acts lately and their rig gave me GAS!!!

After researching gear i narrowed it down to three:

1. Bogner Twin Jet
2. Diezel Herbert
3. Fuchs Mantis

Looks like I'm leaning more towards the Bogner. Just wanted to ask here of the three amps, which one is closer to the MESA in terms of tone but still being an upgrade? Just a bit afraid of completely changing the sound of my band; I wanna retain a similar sound while at the same time upgrading to a better amp.

Thanks.

ive heard great things about the rhoads amps. and fortin

Two questions to consider:
Is there another guitar player in your band and if so what does he play and how will the new amp mix with his rig?
Will one of these 3 be the only amp in your rig?

+1 on the Rhodes
I've using a 100W Einstein but GAS'n for a Rhodes right now.

Yes. He's using an AxeFX rack system with a rectifier, but it's a bit brighter. I'm holding the lower end.

Haven't heard of the Rhodes yet, but heading to their website now

I might be getting rid of my Bogner buy I am looking for a trade, maybe a Vox, low gain Mesa like the Lone star or ED or something similar.

I just picked up a new Engl rig.

Unless you know you don't like Engls, I recommend having a look.

Welcome to RT.

With your othe guitarist playing a Mesa Rec through the AxeFX I've always found the Diezel amps to be a better one-two combo than the Bogner.

Absolutely love the Bogner however, have one myself and can't complain.

IMHO, buy the amp of your choice that would fit you personally the best, a band is a dynamic thing,
don't base your rig decisions on your band in a way that would make you spend 2+K on an amp you don't
like that much.

As far as the amps, I never tried a diezel in person but got to hear alot of comparison clips comparing it to the twin jet.

I've been a owner of a el34'd twin jet for more than a year now, and to say I'm happy wouldn't quiet sum it up,
I'm obsessed about this amp in an unusual way.

You live in the US, take a day off, get to a store that carries them and try the amps, you're the only guy that
would know what amp would work for ya, sound is a very individual thing, I wouldn't say the twin jet nor the herbert are mesa-like in their voicing, the third amp I've never heard of.

BTW - There's no such thing as an upgrade when you're talking on hand made tube amps like mesa\engl\bogner\diezel,
bogner might be alot more "boutique" and rare but bottom line is what works for ya, you need to find YOUR voicing.

TJ's an interesting animal to EQ.
Herbert is a fascinating amp, but it wasn't my fave amp out of the Diezel line up by any stretch.
Rhodes is getting a lot of positive pop from the amp playing collective.

I've owned a TJ, it's probably one of the only amps I regret selling, but at the time, I needed more of a channel changer. But it's tone is damn right wicked. There's a lot of landscape you can cover with the TJ, but you have to EQ with ear, not eye. Interesting amp.

Herbert is all about the mid-cut, and it's got a great clean. That being said, the Hagen kicks all kinds of ass in comparison

Rhodes is something I've never played, but I know a lot of peeps who have, and they're keepers to those peeps.

Good luck!

Thanks, all!

I've decided to get the multi-watt dual and upgrade the G-Major (to 2). So it's still an upgrade, however I still wanna get the TJ eventually, but I'll wait until I have enough cash (and not sell my current amp).

Just have too many gigs lined up and hitting the road soon; don't wanna go out with a new amp without really messing around with it. So I'll def get a TJ maybe in a month or two.

Thanks again!

I had a couple Mesa's for a while as well, then bought a Twin Jet and ran it side by side against a Mesa Roadster. The Mesa sounded like it had a blanket on the cab compared to the TJ. No - I don't scoop the mids either (on Mesa or TJ). On both amps I set bass mid and treble just past 1:00. The TJ is a great amp if eq'd correctly. I also ran the gain fairly low...12:00

I too am planning on selling my Mesas and moving in a different direction.

Mesa's are great amps... Hence their popularity.

Bogners are a special breed, hence their dedicated player base. Nice thing is? We have choice.

Good luck guys!

OP - IMHO dump the Mesa and get the Uber... You will not be disappointed. The Bogner will eat the recto for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I have a rev. blue and they just have that umph that no other amp I have tried has. I have a lot of amps too. The Bogner may make the AXE sound anemic unless he is using some big bottle tube amplification.

I dug what I heard of your stuff and see I just missed you at the Gramercy in NYC. Are you a NY band? I'm in upstate NY if you wanna try an Uber out. I have some other tasty goodies you might want to plug into also.

Mesa MkV is totally different tone than Dual Rec...very respectable amp.

Thanks dude!

I actually just picked up an endorsement deal with FUCHS and been using the Mantis. still tweaking it (been on the road last two weeks), but will get to mess around with it more in the studio next week.

We're based out in NYC. Would love to try out the Uber! \m/

I don't think you can go wrong with the Bogner or the Diezel.
