Here is clip I did real fast at lunch time yesterday:

In that clip its my JVM 410H's pre amp direct into the MBox 2 mini into Cubase where I used a Marshall 1960A impulse to simulate the cab.
I'm still trying to get it all dialed in to get it to sound like I want. That was my first time ever using a cab impulse.

This room I'm in sucks for recording. I hate it so much that I sent the Sennheiser MD 421 MKII back. That mic is awesome but I couldnt stand the recorded tone I got from this room. I'm going to try and get the JVM + cab impulse dialed in better and go that route for recording from now on........or until I move back into my old room upstairs (i'm in a converted garage right now....it still sounds like a shitty garage) or until we buy our next house.

I really like the DI on the JVM...I used it live quite a bit.

I had problems getting a good tone out of the emulated line out on back of the amp.
I tried....but after 20 minutes or so of trying to get it to sound good I moved on to trying just the pre amp with a cab impulse.
I've still got some tweaking to do with the pre+impulse setup....but I think it has potential to sound great.

Glad you are back to recording clips, Dan! Keep it up. Sounds great with impulse cabs.

Sounds killer. I would not have known that wasn't a real cab.

What exactly are cab impulses? I've heard the term a lot over the past couple days and can't find much about it when doing a search.

I would like to know as well  Is it a plug-in?

That's basically how my engineer/producer friend explained it to me, but he'd never heard of "cab impulses" specifically.

Thanks.
I have some tweaking to do....but I can hear the potential.

Cool....thanks.
I've heard some really good clips made with cab impulse files so I had to try it out after getting frustrated with the tone down here in the converted garage.

I dont know the technical explaination.....but its a wave file created and captured using a real cab and mic.
I record the pre amp direct....so it sounds all fizzy and sizzly since there is no power section or cab, add a plug in to the track and load the cab impulse wave file and it makes it sound "normal".
I like this method better than modelers. It seems to have a more real sound to it than modelers do to my ears.

So.. if I want to mess with cab sims, I just take the Line Out of my THD hotplate or Direct out of my amp, throw it in my sequencer and apply the impulse file? Is there a specific plug-in you have to load before loading the cab impulse wave? Maybe I'll try to do some research tonight after work because your clip sounds really nice for a Direct out. Do you have to buy the impulse plug-in? Any links or sites I should look into? I am running Sonar 7  Sorry for all the questions!

This page here has all the info you need -> http://www.guitarampmodeling.com/viewto ... =32&t=2452

I use the "KeFIR" plugin to load the cab impluse file. Its free.
There are a bunch of free cab impulse wav files on the net.
I found a bunch of them over on Andy Sneaps forum....they were created by people using different speakers, cabs, mics, mic positions, mic pre's, etc.

Whats cool about recording this way is that once you have tracked your preamps line out (not speaker emulated line out) you can try different cab impulse files as they will each change the way the tone sounds. Really useful for shaping the tone of the track you just recorded.

Thanks for the link Danny!

Sounds better then I remember my JVM sounding. Great job.
