G'Day everyone,
Is anyone familiar with what Andy LaRoque & Michael Denner used on Abigail. I have a fair idea that they used old modded Marshall amps, or maybe modded JCM 800s (because the tone does remind me of the Mark Cameron amp tones that I was just listening to a few minutes ago), with some EQ-ing going on.
I'm pretty sure they used chorus effects with distortion quite a bit too, you can really hear that "squawk" during parts of A Mansion in Darkness and Black Horsemen. The tone is quite cutting, lots of midrange, fairly spiky midrange too, and lots of bubbly fizzy trebles, and just enough bass to hold it together.
Also does anyone know about the tone & amps on Them? And Fatal Portrait?
Hank Schermann's (sp?) guitar tone on Don't Break the Oath in 1984, is particulary "caustic, squawky" sounding. VERY. Very spiked midrange, but I don't know which frequency.
