Just wondering of those who've had the pleasure of owning this beautiful rig, has anyone tried loading it with decent quality KT77's and if so, what's the outcome like??
i've tried my 101B with KT77s.
i only just got them, JJs, but so far i think they are exactly as described--a cross between EL34s and 6L6s. on high-gain sounds, they were tighter and less squishy in the low-mids and low end, like for palm-muted riffing on the Red Channel. the clean channel had a bit more lows and more sparkle in the highs. the mid-gain sounds, Blue channel and un-boosted Red, seemed similar although with a bit more punch in the low-mids. the treble on the gain channels seemed a bit too high, so i'm going to dial it down a bit when i play it next.
so that's what i thought, in a 101B. caveat: i'm a 6L6 guy, Boogie Mark series, and i don't like super-squishy high-gain sounds. but i do think the 77s are worth trying in an XTC, partly because you can always dial in more squish with the looser Excursion settings.
the JJs reportedly can have sketchy quality control, so i bought from a place that does burn-ins on power tubes before they sell them. Doug's Tubes was out of stock and said he had no plans to restock
, so i got mine from Eurotubes.
