Whats the value/going rate on an all original 78 LP Custom in Natural finish in pretty clean condition? Also it has a Kalamazoo serial number.

Just pricing up some options and wondered if some of you vintage LP players could hook me up with the info! :)

Cheers!!

Dan

I think the going rate for late 70's customs are anywhere from 1900 to 2200 (with the bad economy though, the going rate may be lower). Unfortunately, for you at least, the ebony ones have the highest value whereas the cherry burst and natural ones have the lowest value.

That in US Dollars or UK Pounds? Hadn't seen many natural ones around, so i didnt know if they were rarer :)

US dollars. The ebony customs are the ones that everyone wants, that's why they go for more. Late 70's customs are interesting-they are great guitars. But I remember people hated them not too long ago (especially in the Les Paul forum)-too heavy, pancake bodies (at least until 1978 or so), big headstock, etc. But I've played a handful of them and I think they're pretty good. Like other hated 70's instruments, they're going up in price too!

EDIT-oh yeah, by the way, when I was looking at a 79 cherry burst custom late last year, my friend looked up its price on some guide (I think it was the vintage guitar price guide), and in great condition, it was listed at 2300. I checked ebay at that time, and the late 70's customs did not fetch that kind of money.

Post some pictures if you decide to pick that guitar up ;)

Plenty of natural ones around Dan, they crop up all the time on eBay, weekly in fact. I wouldn't pay anymore than £1,300 off the Bay ;)

Something I tell my customers all the time. Sometimes guitars or finishes are rare because no one bought them the first time. That would be very true of a natural Custom. It would probably sell in my store for a couple hundred bucks less than any other color Custom from that era. Sorry man. If you like it great but don't pay any more because it's a "rare" finish.

I have a '76 Natural Custom that is an awesome guitar.

I would say white ones are worth the most followed by black and then bursts and wine red with the naturals being worth the least. Thats just a general trend Ive seen.

I'd agree that the white ones bring in the most. I want one, so, of course it just so happens that it's the most expensive finish too.  :aww: :D

Thanks for all the replies guys! Very much appreciated!

Decided not to go for it, i was only gonna get it if i could grab it for a steal.. The finish is cool, but im more into White Customs to be honest.. so im gonna look around for one of those instead.

Seems that the late 70s White Customs are going for a lot more than they used to now.. iv seen several go on eBay now for way over $3500, and theres some up for sale that are very clean/all original going for $4500

I always see the white ones bring top dollar on ebay, I think they are more rare than black. Either way you should have bought that one for 1200. That would have been a good price for any color 1980 custom.

Whats the opinion on the late 80s LP Customs? Any good?

Im not a fan from the ones Ive heard, but les pauls have ALWAYS been hit or miss, if you find a good one go for it but that is not generally a good era for LPs IMO.

Yeah i get ya, thats sorta the impression i got from what i read up on google!

I just sold my Goldtop 57RI LP, so im gonna put the cash towards a 79 LP Custom in white. I love those Maple neck/Ebony board Customs, so late 70s would work out best for me!

Yeah, now that I know that white customs are worth the most, I'm still hitting myself for not buying it. I think the guy from Lost ended up buying it.
