DAR is a definite crusher. Not sure what you mean by "hi-fi" sounding, but a couple to add to the list of drop tuners are:
Dorado (Mako)
Engl
Fortin

DAR is pretty much out of business from what I understand.

Hi-fi high-gain means Hughes & Kettner to me as well.

Define "Hi Fi" please. That can be interpreted differently among players.
I rarely use the term, but I would say none of the amps listed fall into that catagory. Except maybe the Diezel.

Hi-Fi = a amplifier that tracks very well and is aggressive and reactive. For example. Modern Rock amps to me cut really well in the mix. Not looking for saturation as much as open percusive attack. A Vh4 ch3 with the gain turn down to down and the master way up or possibly closer to the VHr Ch 2.

Tool
A perfect Circle
Smashing Pumpkins
NIN
Basicly the stuff I grew up listening too. I guess more prog rock.
etc.

I am looking for a VH4 single channel alternative That is aggressive but not over saturated.

Owned a bunch of Mesa Rectifiers and 5150's. All had a cloudy, saggy, fizzy tone to my ears. I want an amp that shows everything and is very unforgiving.

Played an Einstein and Herbert however it they didn't have the percussive nature of the VH4.

Played/owned all 3 uberschall revisions and the low mids where great but always felt they got lost in the band mix.

Played/owned OD-100 STD, Pt-100, VHT 100 CLX, Rivera K-tre, Laney AOR, etc.

Looking for an amp that doesn't sound Gated but really shows off mistakes but when you pull it on it.

Splawn nitro kt-88
Landry 100g3 modern
H&K traiamp Alex Lifeson

yeah, i was a little thrown off by 'high-gain' and 'down tuning;' two adjectives i wouldn't use to describe any of the bands you listed.

but in any event, i think a modded marshall would satisfy your needs.

Adam Jones Drop D and Drop B on some songs
Smashing Pumpkins Drop C#
APC C# tuning
NIN drop D and Drop B on some songs

For de-tuned metal you want an amp with the opposite characteristics of what you're after. This genre is defined by tight, yet big low end, dominant low-mids, and very saturated. Most amps are designed and voiced in E standard so an amp advertised as a "modern" voiced amp is going to emphasize these characteristics in standard tunings (most of the time anyway).
An amp that will be tight and articulate in drop tunings will sound bright and thin in standard. I'd suggest amps like Mesa Mark's, Splawn Quickrod, VHT Pittbull, etc. You're after dry high mids.

Biggest Question is who to do the mod? And since jcm800 seem to be going for about $1000 right now plus around $400-600 for the mod. I figured that would put me in the ballpark for a decent used head that dose what I need.

The brunetti 059 caught my eye as well.

I find it a little funny when the Recto get's overlooked and then the bands listed as to what tones they want all used Recto's at one point or another. It's kinda like when someone wants an AC/DC tone and they mention every amp BUT a Marshall.

A good Recto that's been tweaked with a good OD pedal just kills for modern heavy.

You have been given some interesting options and could probably choose from what you have here.

However, the other thing to consider, I heard you playing Dream Theater and Ozzy...Clearly JP is a Mesa guy and Jake (you played Bark At The Moon) was Marshall's, modded most likely.

The other question, when you want the heavy, down-tuned tone is that for your rhythm playing? I mean you may want to consider a sound for rhythm and a sound for lead. They may require differences...

Just some thoughts based on your video.

Good Luck!

Man, this topic is outright confusing.
Just throw the whole Hi Fi thing out the window and start again.

You want an amp that retains clarity and is not overly saturated when playing downtuned high gain. Period.

VHT/Fryette
