Long Plate 12AX7 tubes. Discussion?

So, looking thru my box of 12AX7 preamp tubes, I notice that I have an Ei Long Plate. I also have another old Yugoslavian Long Plate tube as well.

I recall the Long Plate Yugoslavian tube being pretty darn noisy and microphonic in a combo amp, for sure.

Has anyone experimented with long-plate tubes in any of the modules, in V1 or V2?

NOTE: Yes, I'm on a tube kick right now. I swear to crap, if it's not Module GAS or Pedal GAS or Guitar GAS, it's something... at the moment: tube GAS.

I'm with ya there man! I'm on the kick of upgrading my studio recording computer to a sweetwater creation computer and getting up to Cubase 5. But that will allow me to sell some other gear, which is good. The new features in 5 will help me pair down my studio just a bit ;). Fortunately I've went through tube GAS, and I'm pretty well set with what I have. If you need any other tubes, let me know...I have some I'd like to part with :)

I'm a long plate tube addict...I have some (modern) Ei elites and some NOS Ei...great sounding tubes and thankfully not microphonic (yet)...I also have some Tung-Sol brand RCA long black plates...sweet sounding tube.

I also like the 12ax7m 'Mullard' re-issues.

All that Eggy goodness and you still looking for something"SHEEEEESH"you guys are never happy :hys: Sorry had to ;) all the long plates I had went south or north depending on geographic location :D so I quite using them.

JKD, I have an Ei longplate as well... where do you use it? V1 or V2?

Aren't these the ones that George Lynch is ga-ga over?

I just tried this with Ei reissues and Sovtek LPS and I felt it robbed some of the bottom end from the tone. The crunch and mid range was a bit ritvher but I did not like the bottom end. I can se with some knob fiddling this may be a cool option but I have been setting the module knobs the same way for so long I am not sure I dig the switch. I did toss a balanced one in the PI of the MOD50 head though and I really dig it. I had a tung sol reissue there before. Amp seems less hummy and noisey with single coils. I did have the tube balanced and tested for low microphics though. Oh an it is a sovtek LPs in the PI btw.

Yes..and they're very cool sounding but funilly enough I can't make 'em sound as good ;)

I've only ever tried 'em in v1.....felt I needed something more agressive in v2...I do have a pair, maybe I should try 'em together. :D

Another longplate is the GT-12ax7m .. .the ones I had sounded good until they went microphonic and started making helicopter and 'sounds of the sea' noises..although I still have a couple around that survived (2 out of 5 I think) and work well in PI position.

I had a brief flirt with the JJ ECC803s....didn't find the right module for it....but it probably could stand a re-visit.

Current favourite new production tube is the tung-sol 12ax7 but that's not really a long plate

In all my years playing with stuff I feel the long plates always sound a bit warmer and to a tad a little darker. the short plates are hotter sounding and give a tad more high end sizzle. I myself usually never put a short plate in V1 but anywhere else I seem to like them.

I usually go with the JJ shorts for my style of metal. Really juices the heck out of the cutting tones for faster Power Metal. Lots less muddy vibe between fast chuggy rythm runs.

It all comes down to what your ears like in the long run though.
