Low or high output pickups?

High of course, to BRING THE METAL!

Seriously, I like pretty hot pickups, but not crazy hot. EMG 81s arent my style. But the Suhr SSH+ and DSH+ sounds incredible through the Eggie. Im primarily a high gain guy so I need to get the most out of my EG5! But I dont want too hot so that I have no headroom from my cleans.

So you like Suhr? You should try Rios and Motor City Pickups.

I hear Anderson are insane as well.

I like high output!

I have a bareknuckle ceramic warpig, 22.5k :D

I have found that the MOD takes on the pickup(high or low). But I do love high output.I put a set of MCPs"The Nukes" from Wade and they read about 23k on Bridge and 17k on Neck and I have to contact the fire department before I fire these badboys off :D These are The SHIT,I can't say enough about these pickups....Thanks again for the 3rd degree burns Wade

I'm love all types of pickups. I have guitars with EMG 81's, EMG 85's, EMG SA's, EMG SLV's, Motor City Pickups Afwayus (Hum / Hum, and Hum -sing sing), Gretch duotone w/ gretch buckers, a set of fender texas specials (which will be changed very soon to a set of motor city pickups single coil set), and a tele w/ a custom wound set of alnico II's.

Some high output, some low output, etc etc. EVERY pickup sounds great with the mod50 and m4. It takes anything I have ever given to it, and makes it sound like pure and utter beauty or terror (depending on which module i use!!!).

As for the OP,I think the MOD handles any pickup well,so it boils down to what you like.

It seems to me that cheaper pickups, typically that come stock in $600-$1000 brand name guitars,
do not sound or respond so great in the Mod50. Don't get me wrong its good but not great.

Those same guitars in my bassman 59 reissue they sound really really good.

My sense is that the Mod50 and its modules are designed and voiced to expect the higher quality pickups.
As far as I know thats what they use in the shop to create/test the mod50 stuff.

My next step is better guitars and better pickups

I disagree to a certain extent, although I have only compared two guitars. I compared my sub-$999 Ibanez to my EBMM JP7 and on certain modules such as the Erect and EG5, the bottom end is much tighter on the Ibanez when doing palm mutes, etc. On the top end, the JP7 kills the Ibanez. Now with the SL2 module, they both sound great. And this is comparing the cheap Ibanez stock pickup to the DiMarzio D Sonic which has way more output.

So I guess what it boils down to is the tone you are looking for. One guitar may sound better to you on a certain module where as it may sound bad on another. In the end, it's all up to your ear.

I think that module selection should be based on a blindfold test. When I first selected my modules, I selected them based on the description on Egnater's website. Big mistake. I ended up liking totally different modules than what I originally selected.

After more experimenting, lower power setting and covering the possibilities with eq tweaking, I have found some monsterous tones with the lower output pickups and my less expensive guitars/pickups etc. I guess it always still comes back to the monkey not the machine. (did I just call myself a monkey? ) anyway so goes me being an acoustic player trying to figure out the world of electrics. Although I may not know how to "obtain" a great electric tone... at least quickly. I do know what great electric tone sounds like. IT SOUNDS LIKE EGNATER.......

I've been using the Anderson pickups in my Zion Radicaster
and a Valley Arts Custom Pro (H3,SD1R,SD1) for quite a few years
and love 'em....I have a TOL100 head that I use on jobs right
now,but I've also used them thru a couple differant Soldano's
Bruce modded for me.....Oh,and the Soldano SP-77 preamp that
Jeff was going nuts about was the one I had for several years
and Bruce modded both channels in there,too.....
