I have been thinking about getting an 8 string or even tuning a 7 string to G of F#......I currently tune to dropped C------CGCFAD.......And was thinking of doing GDGCFAD with a 7 or the standard 8 string F#BEADGBE
Have any of you guys used either a bass cab-a small 1x12 or a 2x10 in conjunction with a regular 4x12 OR used a powered sub like the ones that ISP offer. Any suggestions or recommendations?? I think the extra low end might be nice to have. Any info is much appreciated

Im using an 8-string (F#BEADGBE) and 7-strings (ADGCFAD) with VH4 through two 2x12" cabinets. I really can't find I reason why I would get additional sub-cab.

Please bear in mind that the 8th string (F#) is approximately 46 Hz so it may not necessarily sound that nice fully distorted (not that nice = thin and farty), no matter what cabinets you are using. Think about i.e. bass distortions in which the lowest frequencies are often let undistorted.

However the 8-string sounds so orgasmic on the clean channel. :D

I have always wanted to try the ISP active sub, but I see no need for it especially in band context. It would definitely be a very nice toy for home usage when playing alone. Trust me, if you still need more low end than what there is readily available in vast majority of modern high gain amps such as Diezels, you should either play directly to line though a modeling device or buy a bass amp. Are you sure your amp is working properly?

Kind regards,

IA-K

Yes the Herbert is working like a dream. I was just thinking it might add new depth or fullness. I have yet to really mess around with it yet. I was just curious if I needed it or not. Thanks for your help

8 strings...!!! my god... I Cant even "master" and dominate the 6 strings... to move into 8 !!!
My god ?? why dont you simply change strings and tune it low ? instead of an 8 strings guitar ?? (just out of curiosity :D).

I would love to try an 8strings guitar someday, but just out of curiosity... cause I dont think I will ever got one... :D

Do you have some clips of the 8 strings ??

Scale length has a lot to do with it... The longer the scale, the more tension you get on the bass strings so you can use lighter strings without it getting messy.

Oh, and 8 string -> Herbert is devastating!

Im encountering major difficulties in fields of time management and thus, at the moment I do not have anything good (read; professional) clips to share to you guys. However, I can make few direct recorded POD-clips if they only have any value to you.

The reasons why I use 8-string are following:

1.) No need to "wank" accross the neck. I use extremely rarely basic power chords, but rather ad additional base or root note bellow, thus creating harmonically more complex chords and chord transitions. In other words, the 8th string adds to the 7-string guitar what the 7th string added to the 6-string guitar years back when I realized it and made the change.

2.) In case of only downtunig a six string: The urgent need for the lacking upper strings.

3.) Scale lenght, as hairychris444 already wisely stated. BTW, looks like You own a Blackmachine as well. Wonderful guitars. My 8-string has fanned fret system, thus I have 28" scale for the 8th string and 25.5" for the 1st string. Im using 0.09 - 0.84 strings, which feel really comfortable and due to the varying scale length the tension in relation to playability and feel is normal/traditional for every string.

4.) Possibility of almost abnormal cords. Esp. with clean parts.

5.) Additional possibilities in terms of tapping techniques.

All the best to You guys!

Diezel makes a 1x15' and a 2x15' that might give you a little more low end oomph. Not sure why you would want that. Just dime the Deep

I have a Diezel 1x15 as well and it kills. I'm actually selling it due to new car payments. ($700 plus shipping). I use the sub with the Herbert and a Bogner Uber cab and it rocks!

I have 2 ISP Vector SL Subs and they rock. Extreme clarity, Works great with Herbert and with my early Uberschall. You can't beat the ISPs I never want to play without them. Here is a older picture. I need to shoot a new picture with matching 412s and both heads, Awesome tones. I now have the Ubercab sitting under Herbert with a black or wheat grill, the guy I bought the cab from gave me both Bogner wheat grill and the black Uber grill. Rig looks better when it matches up IMO I just had the urge this day to tru out my old Mesa 412 with EVs and Black Shadows The heaviest 412 by far I own out of 7 or 8 cabs.

Don´t get to far away from the classic 4 by 12 sound.
The 12 inch delivers the most organic sound.

Peace,

I don't know if you've played one but how do you think the Vector compares to the SL? Both really interest me.

+ Whats the main difference to owning a sub and having a normal rig and just cranking up the bass? Tightness I'm going to guess?..
