I love my renegade head, but would like a recommendation on which tube to swap out with a 12AT7 or 12AY7 to tame the gain channel a tad. I'm blues and classic rock, and right now the gain is at 11:00. I could never see myself needing more than that.......... I am running thru an old Ampeg Portabass 2x12 with the crossover pulled. These spkrs are totally flat and the Renegade seems to like em! After lunch, I'm gonna replace the 6L6 with KT66 and see if I like 'em. I liked them in an amp that had 6V6 so I'm guessing they will stay.

Hi CharlyG,

V3 and/or V4 for channel 2 only.
V2 for channel 1 only.
And V1 for both channels.
If you only want to tame the gain just "a tad", consider a 5751 for above positions, and try the 12AT7 in V6 (PI).

Thanks, Ima drop in a 12AT in V3 to start, and then go from there.

a bit later.......

Well, for now I have a 12AT in V3 and V4 and it is right in my wheelhouse. I could try a 12AY in V3 but that may be stretching it a bit!

Wait, so you want to swap in a different twin-triode tube so you can crank the gain knob higher?

That's quite possibly the most redundant thing I've ever heard of.

Hello Charly, I run my Renegade with a ECC81/12AT7 in V4. I felt in V3 the Channel lost too much gain. I tried a ECC82 but the gain dropped through the floor. I have messed with Channel 1's tubes just to see what gave but Channel 1 is pretty much perfect as is.

"""Also....I have found that the Bias settings in the manual are very high?, 6L6 I'm running at 50mV, 10mV lower but the E34L's I'm running at 45mV and they are 25mV lower than it states in the manual, don't know if it's my very heavy handed playing or the 240v power here in the UK""". Hope any of that is of use to you......

OK, So I have a gig tomorrow night "Friday", checking my amp over and maybe coz I'm getting old or I do too much bong but the above bias settings are a total fabrication, I even have little sad stickers on the back of my amp with that shit on, but checking with my multi meter they are set to E34L = 85mv and 6L6 = 65mv. I have no idea where my head was....I have even told people that my settings are really low at gigs when asked about my amp. Maybe I was doing a Van Halen and then bought my own bullshit...OMFG ROFLCOPTER!!!

FWIW,in my Renegade,i too swapped the first ecc83 in the second channel with an ecc81 and it is there to stay.
I could not get the same sound just by turning the volume down.
It sounds fantastic.Very touch sensitive and BIG.

greetings,Ed
