M4 (Dual) Tube Layout

I notice my M4 has two pre-amp tubes, a 12at7 and a 12ax7.

I'm assuming one is for input and one for buffering the outputs?

What does what and why the 12at7 rather than an ax7 ?

Really doesn't make a difference. We ship them now with 12ax7 in both...it was minute in the difference and made for confusion.
