I know it has two outputs, but are they assignable to different modules? What I would want to do is have the specific modules going to different channels of a power amp or separate power amps entirely. That way I could use different tubes and speakers for the clean and high gain modules.

Second, are the different channels on each module footswitchable, or just the 4 modules themselves? I don't know the slightest thing about MIDI, so reading the manual didn't help much.

no, you can't assign the outs

yes, you can use a midi footswitch for it.

You'll need a line mixer to do this. Welcome to the world of pro audio. Soundsculpture switchblade is the end of routing your signal. Period. It's pricey though.

There are cheaper alternatives but I can't recommend anything else.

Yes you can switch (midi) each of the eight individual channels of the M4. If you want different power amp tubes for different modules why don't you just get the Randall RT2/50?

It'll midi switch between what ever tubes you want into a single cab no less.

Yup..the RT2/50 is a good suggestion..may load mine up with 6v6 and EL84 (yellowjackets) today for a spin....but other than that its still for sale (there's also one on eBay) :D

EDIT : great price on an RT2/50 here too :
