Steve was nice enough to send me details on the EL34 mod on the Twin Jet. Since it is easily reversible I wanted to give it a try to check the results. So many are raving about it, etc.. This post is not about results at all, but the patience Steve had with all my questions and dealing with my lack of knowledge of these type of things. I am amazed at how much help he gave me and wanted to share.

Thanks very very much Steve!!

Steve has a chubby for solder. It's like Gold to him.
Please let us know how you like the 34's. It's the least you can do since between he and you I have put a deposit down on a TJ.

I will tell you this, staying with KT88's would have been fine as well. I wanted to see what the hype was about the EL34's and since it was actually so simple I could not resist. I will report back after this weekend. I have owned a lot of amps, and I am really digging the Twin Jet above them all. I cannot scream loud enough about Channel 1, it is just freaking amazing, then when you want to go insane on modern metal, channel 2 is grinning at you ever so evil......

Bump for EL34 opinion versus KT88
I have a Rev. 2 Uber. Mine was modded for KT88's when I got it. Recently it was sounding very glassy. Before modding it back for EL34's, I found some hot EL34's out of a batch that I just got and tried them. It sounded sooooo much better. More pissed off, more snarly but most importantly the glassiness was gone and it was a bit less boomy (which is a problem with some of these Uber's since they do not have depth control like the TJ). I hope that helps.

I'm sure Tim will chime in when he's had a good comparison. Here's my opinion in the meantime...KT88 - dry, glassy highs, clean gain, flat midrange, has a certain 'hardness' to the sound...EL34 - saturated, big & rich midrange, smooth high end, has a chewiness to the sound.

EL34's were a big upgrade for me. No contest, really.

Se7en and Steve_K were a big reason for me to try, the response above is exactly why I made the switch to try. I will report back as soon as I have some time. I was a big fan of the KT88's however, so I am holding my opinion until I experience....

Also thanks Se7en for your input and PM, you were a great help as well.

Glad I could help man. :rawk:

Does it mean you had some EL34's and tried them and you think you might dig it, but are waiting for Winged C before posting up. KT's are gonna do it for you. I'm liking the 6550's in My 79 Friedman JMP. It's a big give and take. Both tube types have something to offer.
