I'm thinking of putting a new super strat together and wondered if anyone had tried this combo? Most of my favorite sounding guitars are just plain alder bodies.

The Tom Anderson that I Bought from John Perry is Maple over Alder and it sounds great IMHO. With that said, I personally believe that unless there is a substantial amount of maple material used for the cap, you wont hear that much of a differance. What I mean is that some companies just use a bit of bookmatched maple to make the guitar pretty but it doesn't add much to the tone. If you look at a Les Pauls cap you can see that they are using quite a bit ;)

I would think it would brighten it up a bit (unless it was very thin), but not as bright as a full maple body?

I wouldn't mind trying a Superstrat with that configuration

First carved top strat I made was with that wood config. Sounds great!! Let me dig up some pics to fuel your delimma. :D

Ralph, when you say "sounds great IMHO", how do you mean great? Great for what type of sounds? You know me, there's two types of sounds as far as I'm concerned, heavy rock and classic metal!

I'm also looking at a mahogany back with flame maple top.

tweed,
You made that? Like actually MADE IT? Wow.

When I MAKE a guitar, I order all the parts and hand them all to my local guitar tech and pick it up a few weeks later.

My GMDub is that combo.

It sounds great, although I do admit I haven't fallen in love with the tone of the '59 in the bridge.
I need to pay off the one that's being built before I start replacing stuff on this one, so I'm kinda stuck.
The only thing I have laying around is a Caparison for the neck position.
I do agree that the thickness of the top makes a difference on whether you're getting just cosmetics or enhancin the tone.
I used to have a Warmoth with a 1/16" maple top
My GMW has a 1/8" top(5/8" is available)
Suhr uses 3/16" on most, although you can get up to 3/4"
Gibson & PRS are 5/8"

Yeah I made it in 2001 I think. Its been signed by a lot of dudes so its retired now. Although I think I can respray the clear now and not hose up the signatures, so maybe it'll make a come back lol.

If you like the sound of solid alder then you should like one with a maple cap. Think of it as alder but a the maple brightens up the sound a bit.( but as I said earlier it depends on how much material they use. If they dont use a lot then the guitar will sound just like an all alder body guitar)

As far as Mahagony/Maple..if you have access to the Jackson Phil Collin PC-1 model then you can hear that combo in action ;)

Randy is a badass

You should hear the other stuff that he makes!! KILLER!!!!

I think that combo would sound great also.
Alder is warm... maple is brighter and has some spank to it. I predict a good even-sounding guitar. What fretboard wood are you intending to go with?

Maple neck, one piece with skink stripe, vintage truss rod. Old school baby.

1/4 sawn or flat sawn?

I noticed that you're going to use a Maple neck on your next
guitar, that's cool-I love a good one. But keep in mind, and I know
this sounds nuts, but a Maple neck is going to sound brighter than
a Rosewood fretboard neck....I did'nt believe it either until I tried
two of the same model guitars with different fingerboards and it's
true....Maple is a tighter grain wood and it does have an effect
on how the guitar is going to sound........

It doesn't sound nuts. All the custom guitar parts websites describe maple as being brighter too. However, all my favorite guitarists and all their best tones were achieved with maple necked guitars and my favorite guitars I own have maple.

Flat sawn is described as not as bright as 1/4 sawn. Flat sawn all the way then for me. Just like every old vintage Charvel I have ever owned. Just like my Suhrs. Just like my Warmoths.

I'm not convinced on the 1/4 sawn. I know it's stronger and more stable but I don't want a maple neck that is even brighter than normal.
