Hey all,

I am only minor acquainted with various Marshall cabs and I was curious if there have been major revisions (to cabinet materials, construction, speakers) to Marshall 1960 cabs over the years. Any info would be appreciated.

Here's the info I have:
  • The 1960 cab was first available as a slant cab only as early as '64/'65, while the straight cab model number was a 1984 bass cab up until '65, when they released the 1960B cab. This cab was only rated for 60 watts and was available for both lead and bass use. From 65-70, power rating was increased to 75 watts and still available as a lead or bass cab.
  • From '70-'79, power handling was increased from 75 to 100 watts and was only available as a lead cab from here on out.
  • The back baffle board was changed from ply to chipboard around '70 or '71.
  • The basket-weave grillecloth was replaced by checkerboard in '71 or '72.
  • They started putting the corners on in very late 72.
  • The metal 4x12 grab handles were changed to plastic around 1972 or '73.
  • The checkerboard cloth was replaced by the black around '75 (although it survived in America until '81).
  • The elephant tolex and small check grill were introduced in '76.
  • In early/mid '77 they stopped doing the gold string, as well as the vertical brace on the slant baffles.
  • From '79-'83, power handling was increased to 260 watts.
  • '83 - '86, power handling increased to 280 with the G12M70s
  • From '86 on they were fitted with the G12T-75s, with stereo/mono switching added in '90.
  • Around '89 they started putting Celestion G12 Vintage speakers in some 1960 cabs, before badging the front as 1960AV/BV.
  • In '90 they introduced the 1960AC/BC with M25 Greenbacks.

Were you looking for a Mode 4 cab? And were you successful in that search?
I was! A member pointed me in the direction of a classified and I got a MF280B shipped to me. Super cool of them. I have had a slant MF280 for a long time but wanted the full set. I have a Mesa metal grill, 3 Mesa Recto, a CAA cab, the 2 MF280 cabs, and a Lichtlaerm 4x12 incoming. I do not need more cabs. But...fuck it lol

Man, thank you. I just started writing.....

Couple things I have different....Power handling went from 80w (1966-67) to 100w (1968-1978) to 120w (1968-1978) to 260w/320w(1978-1982) with the first years of the G12 65 and G12 80 replacing the M25 and H30 in 1978 and forward(I should mention that you can find BB M25/H30s in 1978 cabs; but the tag will always say 100w or 120w. They didn't change the tag to reflect 260/320w until 1980). During the early 80s you could find anything from the G12 65, G12 80, G12 H100, and the horrid G12m 70. 1984 started the first year of 75s, with the vented versions. 70s ended thankfully by 1984. The first year of the original V30(The Marshall Vintage 8 ohm) was 1985, they were first in the Artist 30w combos and Studio 15s. By 1987 they went into some Jubilee cabs, noted by the AV/BV on the back tag with 280w on the badge. In 1988 they started going into some 800 cabs, again only known from the back tag saying AV/BV and 280w. I have a 1988 800 cab with them so it definitely happened before 89. By 1992 the Marshall Vintage got much brighter and now the cabs said 1960 Vintage on the front tag.

On thing to mention, many think that plastic corners meant no Pulsonics in the cab, but you can find Pulsonics in cabs as late as 1975. Definitely have to look at the cone codes.

Thanks all. There are a couple local to me at reasonable prices. One is a jcm 800 tagged one and the other appears to be an early 2000’s one. I believe both are loaded with G12T-75’s from their respective eras.

75s got progressively more mid scooped over the decades. I'd bet the 800 cab will sound better...but ya never know. I have a 1987 cab (reissue plexi checkered slant) with the second version non vented 75s and it sounds really good. Good mids when you wouldn't expect them in most 75s.

Maybe I’ll snag that one. I think these are vented 75s based on the ad.

Those will sound massively different than any 75 iteration out there....If you like them you would probably love 65s as well. The vented versions are my fav of all the 75s.
The 65's were John Sykes weapon of choice in his cabs back in the day.
