hey guys,i'm looking at possibly purchasing a clean, used Marshall 1960AX 4x12 100-watt cab.it's got the stock Celestion G12M "greenback" 25-watt speakers in it.the serial number of the cab is #2121 ...my first question is: does anyone know what "model" year this cab is by the serial number? i'm thinkin it's a 1990's model cab.with that i'm also trying to determine if it would, then, have english-built greenbacks,as opposed to the 2000's & on chinese-built greenies???

second question, the small "mom 'n' pop" music shop have it priced at $900 bucks for this 4x12 cab.after inquiring, they'd accept $850 cash...the cab is pretty clean, but it's got some bruises on it.specifically some minor tolex nicks,a few medium-sized tolex tears that look to be re-glued,and a few small tears in the "salt 'n' pepper"-checkered grille cloth.nothing major though.the casters work smooth & i couldnt detect any speaker cone tears, after playing the cab thoroughly...wondering how THIS price stacks up to current "street" value for one of these Marshall cabs???

if anyone can verify the model year, given the serial # ...or correct any of my assumptions,above...or have any input, good or bad, about THIS cab............please do so.thanks!!! :) ...btw,i played it against a late 70's Marshall H30 4x12 cab and a Splawn V30 4x12 cab.this "greenback" 1960AX cab sounded best,imo...sweet thick leads, great chord definition & grind, and overall just sounded full & friggin' mean as hell :scared: :D ...............

Hard to tell by the serial no on the cab, but if you can get the " T " number off the celestion frame, we could probably tell by those numbers. They started production of those in 1990, so thats a pretty broad spread. They came with 25 watt Celestion " classic " spkrs, that were actually greenbacks. The number sequence that dates the heads is different from the cabs. Generally, it is 1-2,letters followed by 2-4 numbers. they will give you the day, month, and year of the speaker. If you can get this number, I'll crack it for you. Its a great sounding cab, IMO, that price may be a little steep, I havent shopped for cabs in a while, its a buyers market right now .Sorry, I know that wasent much help - Jim

That price would be fair for an early 80's or earlier cab (to me). I'd guess they are British made speakers because since the early 2000's, the serial number has started with the year. The cabs are hard enough to come by that you may have to take the plunge if you really want it...

I've got a guy I used to play with locally on craigslist selling his late 70's A cab with original blackback celestions for less than $600. I would not pay more than 700 for one of those reissue cabs, and I have a 2000 BX. These days I would rather get an avatar or mojo etc, than any amp brand, high dollar 4x12.

hey guys, thanks for all the input...from what i remember,i thought that Marshall started loading their 4x12 cabs with "chinese-made" Celestion G12M 25-watt greenies somewhere in the early 2000's...dont know if anyone can confirm this  ...thanks! :)

The 2000 and later have a bar code with the date at the beginning of the serial#.
If it sounds best then pay what you think it's worth. Seen them on ebay for under $700 shipped. Two in FL on ebay now at $500 each picked up. That doesn't help you though.
I have one I love and will never sell.
I have to add you got to actually play it and that is better than buying blind. I've paid $100 more for a guitar in a store than the same online for that very reason.

yep,i hear ya "mesanatic"...i stumbled onto this greenback cab on saturday morning.saw it sitting there, played it and said,WOW,this baby sounds killer! i'm willing to bet that it is a 1990's cab with nicely "broken-in" english-made G12M's.i played a basically-new 2007-2008(?) Marshall 1960AC 4x12 w/chinese G12M's and it didnt do much for me.that was about 8 months ago.this cab, that i tried yesterday, made me instantly say f**k yeah, after playing it for about 20-30 minutes

Dude those AX cabs are so much better than the AC cab even with the same speakers. Much tighter and clearer and can take some volume.

hmmm...interesting! yeah,it's like a night & day difference between the TONE coming out of the 1960AX cab compared to the 1960AC cab that i tried a while back :scared:  i'll have to see if i can grab that cab for a significantly lower price, unless i can find another one for a better bargain...we'll see what happens :D

I bought my marshall 1960ax cab with the english greenbacks in it in NEW condition not a tear on it shipped for $749.00 about 5 or 6 years ago. The newer marshall cabs are all a cluster f#$k of very poor quality control issues. I tried about three years ago to get some 1960 bx cabs in at the local GC and they got 5 sets in in a row striaght from Korg USA/ Marshall and evry set that came in still in the box just looked like sh#t. So I said to hell with Marshall cabs unless they are older. Be careful and get a slightly better price if ya can. You can get a new Mojo musical supply cab that is an exact replica for around $350.00 w/o shipping and buy the celestions and build the whole thing for about $850.00 give or take a few bucks for shipping depending on where you are at. That way the cabs won't have a mark or scratch on them. Maybe even pick up some old stock greenbacks. I think Greazy geo has a set of 4 of those for sale. Check with him. Pm me for the number of a guy that is a big dealer for Mojo and can get the cabs faster and cheaper because he buys in bulk.

I have a 2003 1960AX, and it has Made In England greenbacks in it.
currently looking at a 1960AC with greenies, so may have a comparison soon.
I thought the construction of the AX and the AC was identical?

The HW (Hendrix hand-wired version) could be different?

I thought the construction on these cabs was identical too. Regarding AC vs AX. I don't see how there would be any difference besides the grillcloth being different. I used to have an AX cab and maybe they breathe more than the AC because of the grillcloth being more basket weave type. I have an AC cab now but it doe'snt have the greenies in it, It's got 2 Lead 80's and 2 vintage 30's. Plus I put my own grillcloth on it which is actually pretty open sounding.

Back from the dead.. I go t a line on a nice one. Peoples still liking these??
