Hey guys, I purchased a Marshall 1960B cabinet tonight that has a ply back panel. Tolex on the back panel matched the aging of the rest of the cab, and the back plate is also the stock Marshall plate with the stereo/mono switch.

As far as I've known, these cabs have had MDF back panels since some time in the 70's or so.

Anyone purchased a 1960 cab with a ply back panel stock?

I bought my 1960A new on 2013. It has a plywood back panel. They've been like that for a while. Not sure when they made the switch, but my guess is early 2010's.

Same as the 1936's which used to be all MDF. They're all ply now.

See the pics below. Definitely ply back and baffle.

Yep can confirm the 1936v was all ply. It was a damn good cab but the tolex would tear just breathing on it wrong

Plywood sounds way better to my ears. I have a few old Marshall 4x12’s with plywood backs and they just kill.

That said, I had a late 70’s Marshall 4x12 with a particle board back. It was loaded with 75’s and when someone head it they would tell me they were greenback 25’s in it. The cab sounded great. Years later I pulled the speakers and gave them to a needy friend. Still kept the cab though. ?. So it’s the sum of all of the parts that makes it good.

Brand new (2020) 1960AV was just delivered and it also has a ply back panel. Cab looks so weird, all nice and shiny with no holes in the grill.

Yup, it sounds different. Both can sound good. I actually have a ply, and a MDF back panel for my bogner that I use to tune the cab depending what I'm using it for.

MDF will be more modern, with emphasis on bass.
Ply will make the mids shine.

Are Marshall cabs quality? I always assumed they were below Mesa/Orange in terms of construction and sound.

Marshall cabs seem built fine, and I like the way they sound.

Mesa cabs are built differently; even though some have similar dimensions, the Mesa baffles are glued, and there probably are other construction differences too. Orange cabs certainly look different, and I assume are also built differently. Different construction will give a different sound.

And I know this sounds dumb, but I like the Marshall caster design? I had a Bogner that sounded terrible if not directly on the floor. But it has some weird casters that didn't even work very well. But the Marshall cabs I have sound great on their casters, which is super convenient. Mesa cabs tend to sound OK on casters as well, but I prefer them on the ground unless I use the casters to tame the low end woof of a Recto into one of those huge cabs.

My Marshall 1960BHW Cab is Made Very Well. I'm just not sure I love the speakers that are in it.
