I have one that Trace @ Voodoo did a Jose HG Mod on. Sounds fantastic.

I have one with the Friedman BE / HBE mod and I love it to death. It's just incredible.

I had one for a few months...wish I would have kept it. They are great amps. Take pedals very well. You will definitely need an attenuater to get the most out of the amp. They are stupid LOUD! lol. The only mod I did was to clip the bright cap.

I love mine. Sounds huge.
Run a couple pedals with it and it rocks hard.
Got my new small board together, need a good power source, and it sounds great!

I have one that is completely gutted only the PT is original..Great platform to mod off just a bit tight since its the small chassis. Mine is currently a "SS50" with a basic clean channel...Before it was modded it did sound good but now it is so much more usable. The SS circuit and Friedman master volume are the best...

I've kinda wanted to try one, what's your take on it? How early does it break up or is an attenuator a must?

I'd guess boosting it is a must to get heavy tones - or mod the hell out of it. I look forward to some clips Reza

Any stock non master volume Marshall is either a platform for pedals or needs to be stupid loud to sound good (unless you have an attenuator). They also need low wattage speakers or even loud they will sound pretty much clean. Unless you have a collectable amp send it to the modder of choice and you will end up with a usable amp at volume levels you can enjoy.

the 1987 and 1959 reissues are great amps! Just have the preamp converted to a 2203 (takes a few components, fairly easy) and use a ts808 in front and you're done.

Sounds awesome but crazy loud. To loud for a basement player like me.

I think in 09 when I started all this amp flipping the 3rd one I had off ebay was a SLP reissue that had a Voodoo Jose mod. Sounded great. Kinda wish I would have kept it..I know Voodoo doesn't get a lot of love around here but it was a killer amp. It was a newer reissue as well, one with a loop.

If you google Voodoo Jose mod I think a RI mod comes up, pretty sure I got all geeked up on that vid and bid on that amp lol...I would post the link but I'm at work..

I think the one I have is the 1987x MkII

It's a red one anyway... I don't remember the exact model, but it's pretty damn awesome. You won't really find out how cool it is until you record or play live with it.

An attenuator is an absolute must. It's monstrous.

I had a JTM45 that was killer, you'd have to blast it to get gritty tones from it - but running a Bogner Blue pedal was a really good rock/blues tone machine

I have the Ceriatone 1987, and I've had a 1959SLP reissue. These nmv Marshall's are my favorite amps ever. I'd get an attenuator/boost and call it a day. That setup has cured all my amp gas.

It may not seem all that logical but running a Bogner Blue or Red would save you from modding it if you wanted heavy tones. I ran a Bogner Red into the clean channel of my old BE-100 and (dare i say) I might have liked the OD sounds I got better out of the Bogner

If I remember correctly (your Hagen vid) you have some killer fuzz pedals, those would be a blast into the 1987x

I owned one twice; indeed, it needs to get really loud to distort
Want Plexi cranked tones? Check out the Marshall 2061x
It's handwired, 20 watts and distorts at at manageable volume levels
Not only that, it sounds better than the 1987x in every aspect IMO

If you want a master volume mod for the 1987x, maybe inquire about what kind of MV is on a Wizard Vintage Classic, which is basically the same amp with a MV on the back panel and no loop. Thing sounds amazing

Cranked it sounds like a great 70's rock sound.
Which is cool.
But it definitely needs the master volume mod.
I'm interested to see how some other mods sound on it.
Will report back after I have recorded it.

You should be able to get a lot out of it when recording with the Torpedo Live. Your clips are awesome! Looking forward to the clips!!
