Amp ho
This has been a long time coming. Found this 1984 4010 from Sam Ash for a good price, but have no interest in lugging around a combo. I pulled the chassis immediately and saw that thing had been completely untouched inside. Big relief.

Took a few months for the headshell to come in and I had the amp recapped and converted to EL34s. I also pulled a leg of the mid cap. Now it’s a portable, affordable 2204 and a little nod to the snorkler.

Love it! Looks great and 2204’s are easy enough to dial in that being upside down isn’t too much of a drag.

I’ve got a couple of combos I’m planning on doing something similar with

You get used to the reverse knobs way faster than you’d think. At least I did. I personally love that it’s upside down- just makes it a little unique.

I considered having new faceplates made and reversing the knobs and everything but I’m glad I didn’t go that route.

Pretty cool. being upside down does make it stand out.
If you really wanted to have the controls right side up the easies thing to do would be flip the headshell. Move the feet and handle to opposite sides. Any screw holes can easily be concealed with some black screws and it doesn't look off-putting.

Upside down is the new right side up.
Congrats! 4010s are killer.

Can I ask how much you snagged that for at the GC? I love my 4010, but I think it's the only amp I ever overpaid for. But then the more I play it, the more I think it's worth every penny. I have a Sour Mash cab coming soon for it.

It was 1K. Had a bunch of vintage tubes which was cool. Also came with an extra G12T-75.

Sourmash made this cab - I'm happy with it for sure. I think you'll like it.

Nice...love 4010's. I could not find a decent one in my neck of the woods for years so ended up with a 4104. Incredible amp but heavy to lug with just the center handle. Thought about converting to a head but just can't come to grips with the modification so it stays as is. Sometimes I use it for easy load in gigs but less these days. Tough to contend with a Friedman DSM that I can pick up with 1 finger.

I think I'll be into my 4010 for $1800 when it's all said and done. But I paid $2k for my Friedman Dirty Shirley and I think the 4010 slays it.
Figure 250 for the cabinet so you paid what- $1550 for the 4010? Considering a 2204 is around 2000-2400 and 2203 a couple hundred more- I’d say you did fine man

I have a 4010 I've been wanting to do this to.

I've considered just building it as practice for doing finger box joints and learning how to wrap tolex, but I've seen Sourmash's stuff and think a shell from him would be ideal.

There's also a shop out of Indiana that will make you a right-side-up screenprinted face plate.

I paid $1300 in a cross-country CL deal. Shipping was $200 and then I had it converted to EL34s and recapped. New combo cab will be vintage cream with wheat grill cloth for $330 plus shipping. So closer to $2k all in. But I so love the amp and they are pretty rare.

I am a head and cab guy, so I totally get converting a combo to a head. What I think is funny is that Marshall fans want heads and you see combos converted to heads. Fender fans its the other way. Very common to see a bassman or bandmaster head converted to a combo. :)
