Stopped in to GC over the weekend and saw used (but not badly abused) Marshall 6101 30 Anniversary 1x12 combo in the used junk pile. I haven't played a 6101 since the early 90's and I remember liking the head I played then. So I took the combo into the little glass room where the kids get brewtalz and fired it up.
What a major disappointment. I don't know if I remembered wrong, if this amp sucked, or if the combos aren't like the heads, but this amp was very uninspiring. The clean channel was pretty good for a Marshall, but lacked volume compared to the other channels. The crucnh channel was pretty good until you pushed one of the "more gain" buttons. The drive channel sounded awful, very muddy/mushy, lacked balls and articulation, kinda buzzy, etc...
They had it "on sale" for $1400 but I'm sure would have sold it much cheaper. Too bad it sounded so lousy.
They did have a brand new Peavy Penta head for $399, which seemed kinda cheap for an all tube head.
Oh yeah, I wiggled the knobs on a JVM head and still can't believe the cheapness in the JVM compared to all of the other tube Marshall amps. Sad. But the JVM sounds much better than that 6101 did.
