Marshall JVM 205; do we like it?

I'm mulling over a few different amp options, Orange Rockerverb 50, DSL 50, Carvin Legacy, Bogner Alchemist, but what is the consensus on the JVM 205. I know the 410 is liked pretty well.

How does the 205 compare to the DSL 50? It costs about twice as much, is it twice as good?

Consider I play mostly 80's rock and metal, occasional chorused cleans. Ratt, Dokken, Queenryche, Def Leppard (I know, guilty pleasure   ) etc. I figured the Marshall tone was the right call. I probably can't go much higher up the food chain than $1200 give or take, but cheaper would be sweet.

I heard one that I thought sounded a little better than the 410, and I like the 410. Not sure why it sounded better. Maybe because I wasent the one playing it :D

I had 2 of them. I REALLY liked them. However, I only used 1 mode (CH2 Green with OD pedal) and thought it was a bit of overkill to have an amp with 6 different channels essentially.

One thing that bothered me was the really heavy sounds (CH2 Orange and Red). Though the basic tone was cool, there was alot of "white noise" or "hissy" artifacts underlying the sound. Really hard to describe but both of the 205's I owned had that issue.

For the price you can get them used mint get the big gun 100 watter.

If those are your options, I think the Rockerverb is more meaty, organic sounding, and I like the cleans better. I can't speak to how they hold up though.

I like it. But I'd take a DSL over a JVM

+1, but the 205c in my opinion sounds badass with the speaker combination it comes with. I had both a 205c and 215c. I liked the 205c way better than the 215c with stock speakers. Through a 2x12 V30 cab though, they both sounded great.

I'd go DSL or an Egnater Renegade myself.
+1. The Renegade is so nice for the $. It would kill for the sounds you mentioned. I love the DSL, but the Renegade was just so easy to play and sounded very clean, as in meaty drive with no fizz. Also love the 6l6-el34 blend function. Very nice chimey clean channel also.

if you play your cards right you can probably find a Splawn Quickrod for that price which in my opinion slays any of the amps you listed at 80's hardrock/metal.

The cheaper single channel versions of the Quickrod can be found as well for that price or slightly less if you don't need a clean channel

Quickrod, ProStock, and Competition were all on my "maybe" list. Love their tones, tough to find one to test.

Egnater Renegade? I was mulling over trying to find a seminar head, but I'll have to see who stocks these and try one.

On a side note, I've got a line on a Mk II super lead, 1959(?), and I'm out and out harassing this dude to sell it to me.
