Ok.

First, let me explain that I do not know too much about amps. I need/want an amazing amp. I already have some good guitars. I love my guitars.... they are great. (Gibson Les Paul Supreme, Paul Reed Smith CE22, Fender SRV Strat, Fender Tele..american made of course).

I mainly play Blues and Classic Rock. My favorite guitarists are Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page, John Mayer, etc.... you get it. I really want the tone of my amp/effects to be able to produce similar tones to the stuff I listen to and play ^^ mainly that Hendrix/SRV tone and a classic rock tone.

I have been trying to find the right amp for me. I have kind of narrowed it down to Fender or Marshall. I havent been able to decide if I want a fender or a marshall lol. (BUT if you think a different brand would be right for me then tell me!)

And I dont know if I should get a NEW amp, or an OLD(Vintage) amp.

Here are some amps I am considering, or looking at: [again I dont know if I should get the new(reissue) or old(vintage)]

Fender 65 Super Reverb Combo Amp

Fender 64 Vibroverb Custom Guitar Combo Amp

Fender 65 Twin Reverb Amp

Fender Bassman

Marshall vintage

Marshall Super lead

So basically I would like to know,

Question # 1
Fender or Marshall?

Question # 2
New or Old?

Question # 3
If Fender, what amp? lol (doesnt have to be in the ones i listed)

Question # 4
If marshall, what amp? (doesnt have to be in the ones i listed)

Question # 5
If not Fender or Marshall, what brand?

Question # 6
What should I look for in an old amp to let me know that its good ...etc?

Question # 7
What should I look for an amp in general?

and as far as effects goes, ill worry about them after I get my amp!

ANY ADVICE will be greatly appreciated.... please help me! Any amp advice or recomendation would be helpful! Im sure you guys will recommend somthing I havent thought about, thanx again...

Question # 1
Fender or Marshall?

For the artists you mention I'd go for Marshallesque.

Question # 2
New or Old?

If you can find an old JTM or Plexi in your price range then go for it. However there are a ton of great sounding new amps like Fargen, Ceriatone, Bruno, D'Allessandro, Reinhardt, etc.

Question # 4
If marshall, what amp? (doesnt have to be in the ones i listed)

Question # 5
If not Fender or Marshall, what brand?

See #2

I would suggest you play as many as you can find. You might pose your question at http://www.thegearpage.com as well, since they are more vintage oriented (and I would guess would suggest a silverface twin).

thank you for the advice :D appreciate it!

anyone else with any other adivice!!???

THD - Flexi 50. This is the amp you want to check out. With a hot plate , the right tubes and a good cab. It well get the marshall, vox, fender, orange, hiwatt ,etc.-vibe. It does not sound just like these - but it well get you in that range. Check out there web site.

for the sounds you are referring to, the new marshall vintage modern will get you what you want for around two grand for a half stack
then again, I am a jvm fan, those are a bit more, but you have the advantage of channel switching for more or less crunch on demand, and that amp takes pedals very well.

For your style, Fender all the way.

1. Fender.

2. Either/or. Doesnt really matter. If you want to be a badass and spend 4 grand on a Tweed Super amp, then do it and have the tone of the gods. But Fenders newer high end amps are very nice...

3. Well if you want that SRV tone, Vibroverb is where its at. Although you can get something similar, and probably more of standard crunch sound out of a Super Reverb. I like both.

4. If you decided to go Marshall Id find a 70's JMP Non Master Volume amp or Id buy a clone of the same thing.

5. For the tones you want, why look anywhere else? Unless of course you want to buy yourself a high doller boutique clone, like a Victoria or a Komet. Which IMO is a damn fine idea. Id like both of those amps.

6. Play it. If it sounds good, it sounds good. If it sounds almost there but not quite, chances are its the tubes or with a few minor tweaks it can sound glorious. If its beat to hell and you cant even get sound out of it. Id pass on it only because I wouldnt want to spend the money having someone fix it.

7. Tone. Does it give you goose bumps? Thats always a good sign if it does.

I also say Fender Vibraverb or a Deluxe Reverb. Just remember the smaller the amp the harder it is to get a decent clean sound. If you do but a 20 watt or in that size amp I can give you tones of pointers on how to get it to do clean and still be pretty loud. I would go for 45 watts if I were you.

I think a good Marshall or Fender with an assortment of pedals is what you are after. Either will kill for what you want to do.

If you want to go vintage then Either of the Fender or Marshall models that you mentioned would be just fine. If you want to go new, I think the Marshall Vintage modern with some pedals will nail the tones you are looking for or any of the newer Fender tube series. The real hard part is matching the correct pedals to the amp. You can find that info over at the gear page for sure.

Your missing the best line for blues, rock and heavy metal IMHO, Mesa Boogie....check out the line. Buy used to get them in your price range.

Expensive: Marshall model 1959 (100 Watt) or model 1987 ( 50 Watt) , Hand Wired reissue series, or Pre 1970 versions of the same amps, plus also Tweed Bassmans, and Marshall JTM-45's.

Moderate: Fender tweed Bassman reissue, 70's Marshall model 1959, or 1987 , Marshall JTM-45 reissue

Cheap: 50 watt models Traynor YBA-1, YGA-1
100 Watts model YBA-3

All of them are essentially iterations of the Fender Tweed Bassman circuit. With the exception of post 1974 Marshalls, and the Tweed Bassman reissue, all of them are PTP hand wired amps. The Traynors also use EL-34 tubes like the Marshalls. Early versions of the Traynors also have a choke in the circuit, while later versions utilise a chokeless design. All of the amps save for a few very early Traynors, the Bassman, and the JTM-45 have solid state rectification. The tube rectifier on the Bassman can be safely switched over to use a Solid State rectifier for less PSU sag. --I'm not sure about the voltages found inside the JTM-45's and the early Traynors, but I wouldn't rule out doing the same with them either.

If I was going for a classic rock tone I'd personally get a Vox AC30TBX and a decent OD pedal. A guy I know uses one of these with a Marshall Gov'ner and he gets GREAT classic rock tone.

Check out http://www.omegaamps.com Jim Price can build you an amp that will knock your socks off. He's one of the nicest guys in the biz and he has some of the best ears too. If you tell him what you're after he'll build you an amp that will do it in spades.

I would check out an early silverface bassman if you don't need reverb.

You can mod the bass input channel to sound kind of like a plexi and have the normal channel like the typical blackface sound. Allen amps used to do that mod. there is a guy with a bunch of these type of amps that was selling one, not sure if its still for sale.

Contact this guy, he knows all about the mods...
