i should have grabbed one of these when they were $300 all day, i wanted the 8200 though

i had the big brother which is the 8200 & i paid 300 back in 2010. Then sold it to a Meshuggah fan for $600.00. It was NOS Still in the box.

Personally, I don't know how much the preamp tube makes. It's very solid-state sounding, but that's kind of its charm. Great amp for 90's Metal.

I was shocked at how different tubes effect the overall volume of the amp.

That's interesting. As far as the circuit, I'm pretty sure it's diodes hitting that tube first. The fact that it's volume that you're getting leads me to believe that it's either towards the last stages of gain or not in the gain stages at all and doing something else.

On the 8100/8080 it’s one unbypassed gain stage (with what I think may be negative feedback around it) and cathode follower before the tonestack. Diodes first. I bet it doesn’t make a ton of difference but I haven’t tried bypassing it.

The 8200 I think is a bit different if I recall.

8100 not really super different from the jmp1. I got an 8080 combo for £50 like a decade ago and cut it into a head. It rips for that one specific sound.

I bought the combo version, I think the VS8080 when I was stationed in Japan, approx 1993 maybe. I think I paid about $500 new (yen rate sucked at that time). I was not a gear whore say that time and really didn’t know how to dial it in very well. Sold it sometime in the mid 2000’s. That thing was heavy as hell. It was my first “real” amp and I was so proud of it at the time. It wasn’t until 2020 I got my first tube Marshall head.

I always wanted an 8100, but it just never worked out. Now they are too expensive, and I worry about how long they would last since they have a history of blowing output transistors that are getting difficult to replace.
