I currently have a Orange AD30R and I love it. I was looking around at similar amps and was reading about the Matchless DC30. Anyone here own one? How does it compare to a AD30R or a Vox AC30?
I never played a DC30 'cause they are hard to find in Shops over here in Germany - but I did check out several Hot Cats, old Vox-amps, the AD30 and compared them to the one:
The DC30 is much more like an AC30 than the Orange. It has a little more crunch, and chords are a bit more complex, the cleans are awesome. Great head for moderate to classic rock gain levels.
Bad Cats are on the same level, great AC style amps.
Yes, the DC30 is kind of a ballsier AC30. A little more dirty, slightly darker in tone but still kinda chimey - not as dark as the AD30. The Bad Cat Black Cat 30 is similar to the DC30, but not quite as raw sounding. Slightly more refined. I've heard the Matchless die-hards refer to the Black Cat 30 as too hi-fi...that's a bit of a stretch IMO, they're not THAT different from the DC30.
That Schmidt sounds pretty sick too. I'd love to hear one in person.

This sums it up pretty well, although its a 2x12 and not a head (that would be the HC30). If you want something with a bit more "bark" when pushed as well as more chiming, "piano-like" cleans than the C Series amps, check out a Chieftain or Clubman.
