I've been gasing over a used one on ebay. I just purchased a PRS Holcomb (which I love) but I'm contemplating selling it to put towards the Mayones. Am I completely nuts? I've never played one and where I'm located in NE Ohio no one has one. Any experiences with a Mayones would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Mayones builds a good guitar, but so does PRS. In this sort of price range, it really comes down to preference IMO. People get really excited about Mayones in the US because they seem to build something 'unique' compared to what we have here, but it's important to keep in mind - they don't have any magic formula that no one else does, just well built instruments.

I've owned multiple guitars from all the big names over the years. For MY preferences, PRS builds a better guitar than Mayones. However, I know just as many guys that could fairly say the opposite.

If you really do love the PRS, I would hold onto it - they really do build a great guitar. If it doesn't check some boxes for you that the Mayones does, give it a shot.

I've had a ton of PRS and Mayos. I prefer the Mayones stuff but they do sound tighter/brighter than the PRS stuff in general due to being neckthru.

If you're a metal guy then go for the Mayones. If you aren't then go for PRS.

I alsp think it is worth mentioning that the newer Mayones are much much much nicer than the older stuff. If you buy used, try to get one as new as possible.

I prefer shredder guitars because if the neck profiles and pick up responses. Before the Holcomb I played a Parker Fly for many years. I'm just really curious and can't seem to get the Mayones off my mind.

Thanks for the feedback Eric. I'm just stuck on the Mayones for some reason and would be taking a huge risk with selling my Holcomb to snag it. I love the PRS but I'm always searching to see if something would be better for me. Sigh. It never ends...

I like the Mayones, I played a couple. Solid guitar. Felt like a better quality Ibanez to me. PRS's are cool, but too common for me. Anyhow, apples and oranges. Set neck vs. Bolt on.

I have multiple PRS guitars and one Regius 6. They're all extremely well made. These days, the Mayo tends to fit me better, but not because it's better; it's just different. And there are plenty of times when the PRSi call me back.

I currently own 15 guitars, and in my life I've probably owned 40 to 50. In my opinion, there is no single "ultimate" guitar for most folks. There's just what we're in the mood for right now. And that can make us fickle.

Sell the PRS if you honestly think you won't miss it.

I picked up a Regius about 2 months ago, had one of the most awesome burl tops I'd ever seen and bought it without ever touching it.. and it's by far the best guitar I've ever owned.. as far as looks, and play-ability.. top notch

That's one of the issues I'm having. Never played a Mayones but it's speaking to me for some reason. I love the Holcomb and waited nearly 4 months for it too. Wish someone had one close by lol. Thanks for the input!

Both great guitars. Its great to have both
PRS for all around guitar and Mayones for metal stuff as what Stealthastic said.

I'm a sucker for beautiful wood and top-notch construction and materials. That's what first spoke to me about Mayones. I knew by reputation they were well made (like you, I wasn't able to play one before I purchased), and I could get a top and a color that, if I got, say, a PRS, would put me into Private Stock territory. And I'm just not willing to pay that much for a guitar.

Here's my Regius...

No doubt, it's a looker and a player. But at the risk of sounding like a broken record in this thread: I can't say it's "better" than a good PRS; it's just different - different from the PRSi that I own, anyway.

I haven't played a Holcomb, but guys like him have played and been influenced by every metal guitar there is, including the Mayones Regius. So I wouldn't be surprised if his PRS and the Regius are in similar territory in terms of feel and tone. From there, it could just be an aesthetic choice that you're making, and in my book that's still completely valid. Whatever inspires you to play!

That's the same color Regius that I'm interested in. I guess it's coming down to I know I like my Holcomb and PRS make a great guitar, owned many of them in my collecting days. Now that I'm basically just a hobbyist player I'm looking to just have a great guitar to settle on. I'm not a shredder by any means but prefer a faster playing guitar with great quilty. Thank you for the feedback and hope you're enjoying that beast!

You've got good taste! Haha.

One thing I can say, definitively, about the two guitars: The Regius (at least mine) has relatively small frets. They are described as "jumbo" on the spec sheet, but the frets on my PRS Custom 24 Floyd, which I believe has DGT-sized frets - same as the Halcomb - are noticeably taller and wider, which I prefer. Not a huge deal for me, but if there was anything I'd change about my Mayo it would be that. And since I consider it a keeper, I've been thinking about sending it out for a professional refret. If I do that, I'll also upgrade to stainless steel.

I think in terms of Mayo/PRS it another case of EU/USA duality of specialty and rareness that occurs in every facet of musical instruments, not necessarily better, but different and more valuable because of market rarity. This happens across the board, Mesa/Diezel, Moog/Nord, PRS/Mayones. Are any of those better than the other? Arguably for certain applications, but they are all considerably more expensive across the pond in each circumstance, and I think this creates an aura around certain brands as being better simply because of rarity. Also all the gear hocking that goes/went on by one guy in a particular djent band that more or less created a huge boom for a lot of these European builders and the me too mentality of impressionable kids across the country to have exactly what their favorite guitar player has, even if he's just going to sell it in three weeks.

Couldn't agree more that it happens that way for a lot of people. The funny thing is about me I really don't listen to any of those artist. I just like the style of guitars. I'm not trying to base my decision on rarity of the instrument, I've done that in the past and been burned on quite a few deals haha.

Thank you everyone for all your input. I've decided to go for the Mayones Regius 6. My Holcomb is for sale, posted in the classifieds.

Thanks again!
