Hi all, I got a Mesa boogie triple rectifier multiwatt and found it to be a lot more fizzy than my 2-channel dual rectifiers.
It feels fizzy and thin no matter the pre or powertubes in there.
I did bias the str 440 6l6’s so it sounds a bit better but not by a long shot with my duals.
I also notice that you can use the fx loop as a sort boost or more saturation?
If I enable it and dime the channel volume and then use the output volume, I get a bit more saturation and aggression.
Is that common for 3 channel triple rectifiers?
I know it needs some volume to sound better but I don’t need that volume for my dual recs so I’m trying to see what I can squeeze out of the amp.
If I’m using the fx loop v4 is being used as preamp tube?

Can you post your settings & sound clips for the MW vs your 2 ch?

I will do that later on. I got some pretty ok settings out of it using Kyle Bull’s settings of turning off the treble and almost diming the mids and presence instead:

It’s a really strange setting that I have never used but it seems to work in this particular amp somehow. Not 100% convinced but it sounds a good deal thicker and tighter.
The 2 channel recs are easier to dial in.

I always had the loop off. It makes the Amp undefined. Hit it with a clen boosr and try Gain on 7, Bass between 6 and 7, mids and highs on 4 and start with the presence on 9 o'clock and set to taste, or leave it there. The Amp starts to open up with the Master at 9 o'clock.

Yeah that seems to work most times but not with this amp somehow. The Kyle Bull treble thing helped with the overall sound of the amp and yes more volume will make it more aggressive and tighter

I have a friend that has a dual multiwatt that’s like this as well. We shot it out against my early revision g that had been modded to a revision C and the multiwatt was extremely fizzy and just lacking. Oddly enough I picked up a triple multiwatt on a great trade and compared it against my two channel revision G and honestly found them to be almost the same tonally, enough so where I sold the modded revision G and kept the triple for the improved clean and flexibility.

So this makes me wonder if some of the multiwatts just ended up fizzier for some reason.

Yeah it is strange, it also didn’t sound as good as the 3 channels before that. It’s now better as you can hear in the clip but I do like the 2 channels way better because of its simplicity to get a tight thick dynamic sound out of it

Sounds about right to me. What's the dB reading at the cab? Possibly your'e just too quiet? That'll fizz a Recto.

That clip sounds nice and growly to me. Like a recto should.

@Michiel Kemper - I had a bit of trouble understanding your settings at the beginning of the clip but from here (laptop speakers) it sounds almost as it should with your phone mic off center like that. Curious if it would be different more straight on. You also mentioned you had the Master dimed? Wow.
I also sometimes do the Treble on '0' trick on my Dual. Like @endofall I have a R modded to C - no boost needed. I understand he sold his and kept his Triple. I have very little experience with the Multiwatts, especially at volume.

One thing to note, if you are not already, is that if you play with the FX engaged, patch the send/receive with a patch cable. That should help. That's how I run mine because I like having the master volume control. But I'm more like Gain at 3pm, Channel at 11am and Master at 10am.

Yours sounds a tad thin but may just be where your camera is.

Ill have to look for Kyles video. I just tried this and started a thread lol. I never thought to try it but it works on my-rev g and my three channel dual rectos. I hate what the fx loop does to the sound personally, so i always have it on bypass. Currently i have gain-1;00, treble-off, mids-100%, bass-off, presence-100%, and hit it with a boost.

Zero Treble has been a thing on Rectos forever. It's a totally different dynamic.

...but Bass at 0 and boosted? Are you playing an 8 string in a 3 guitar band??

Yeah, I don’t get the bass at zero either. That will definitely neuter the size of the sound. The treble at zero thing is just to get bigger mids.
Need to ultimately EQ with your ears above anything else.

nope 7 strings, drop a, two guitarists, doesn't sound thin to me at all. i posted a clip in my post, works for me,,

I use the effects loop on my Dual for the Master Volume thing. It sounds a lot better to me. Mine has Philips 7581A power tubes and GE and RCA preamp tubes. I never liked the 440s. The 430s were a little thicker sounding which are the Sovtek 6L6WXT+ or EH 6L6GC (that's what they are today). The Sovtek 5881 sounds good in them and all of the Mesas if you ask me.

I have a triple multiwatt, never thought to try with the loop off.. Now im curious.

Thst fizzes out many of my rectos I’ve had .even my Hermanson recto . It’s only fizzy at low volume . Not at all loud
