Mesa halfback 4x12 vs. Recto Trad/Stiletto vs. VHT cabs?

found a Halfback 4x12 with Black Shadows for what i think is a reasonable price. is this gonna be good for metal or would i be better off with a fully closed back? (for those who don't know, it's basically an open 2x12 on top of a closed 2x12, with a divider between). maybe it'd be worth getting just for the speakers?

how do the dimensions compare to other cabs?
 
Check to see what speakers are in the bottom half of the Mesa cab. Some will often say that they're the EVM's without even checking. I love the mix of EVM's and MC90's. For metal they are fantastic. :thumbsup:
 
i think all 4 are the same. this is one of the top ones, pic from the seller's ad:

I've tried my main head with a mesa halfback 4x12 with mc90s, one with the emi-greenback-type speakers and with my VHT D412s (one with H30s and one with P50s). I've never used it with trad/stileto cabs. To ME the VHT D412s are much better for what I want from a cab and together with the H30s make it my favorite combo. The MC90s sounded terrible to me. In fact they are my least favorite speaker I've ever tried, but I seem to be in the minority.

what don't you like about the C90s? i tried a Recto Traditional cab loaded with them, and it sounded sweet with my Engl. i'm just worried that it'll sound too similar to my Ampeg 4x12 with 2 CL80s and 2 Warehouse CL80 clones. i'm definitely curious about the D412 though.

I just thought they sounded thin and bright. I only tried them that one time and with only two different heads, but I really didn't like them.

I love my D412 cabs. :thumbsup:
