My 1990 markIVA medium head is 9inches tall without the feet. The reverb tank is cut into a slot and recessed in the bottom.
You are smart to go to a head, I know I couldn't deal with a mark IV combo, what a brick those are.
Thanks! I had a Medium head before but never thought to measure it. How did you date yours to 1990? Mine is an B but has the attached power cable and courtesy outlet but has smooth Taurus tolex, and the "Boogie" logo. Serial number 7xxx. But one of the cleanest amps I've ever seen. If you could measure the height of the front panel insert, that would be a big help too.
To get the date on the markIVa, I just sent the serial number to mesa asking for the schematic when I was having issues and they informed me of the date.
The front panel is 4 7/8inches. Then on top of that is a piece of foam stuck on, it sticks with 2 pieces of velcro to a V shaped front section where the fan is mounted with a bracket.
The reverb tank was sunk in the chassis to prevent noise. If we remember that Mesa started by modding Fenders. Fender heads with reverb would generally have a higher head shell to get the reverb tank away from the chassis. Just look at the Bandmaster Reverb. Even more recently with the Supersonic 60 first release, the heads didn't have reverb and only the combos did. I have to think this was due to noise concerns with putting the reverb tank too close. The other way to get around this is to do what Mesa did and cut a slot in the bottom of the chassis.
