Mesa Recto 4x12 Cab vs. Marshall 1960 4x12

Hey guys,

Mesa Recto 4x12 Cab vs. Marshall 1960 4x12 using a Marshall DSL100h head


I could really use your help. I just bought a new Marshall DSL100h. Now I just need to pair it with a cab!

I'm between an old/used Mesa Recto 4x12 Cab with Vintage 30's or a Marshall 1960 4x12. I haven't played with either so would really appreciate you help and opinions!!!

My favorite tones are from Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream and Weezer's Blue Album. I play in a rock band but also enjoy playing everything from blues to metal.

Having said that, which Cab would you recommend for the Marshall DSL100h? Mesa Recto 4x12 Cab with Vintage 30's or a Marshall 1960?

Huge SP fan here and I've owned a Mesa cab for years. Super heavy and solid.
I just recently bought a peavey cab that has the 75 watt celestions and it sounds great too. Different animals.

I'd look for a Marshall 1960 Vintage cab. Same cab as a regular 1960 lead, but with V30's.
 
I have both. My Mesa cab isn't the bigger Recto Cab, but isn't the older Mark style either, just the 'standard' 4x12. I'm not sure what speakers are in, whatever was stock. It weighs a ton and is darker in tone. It maintains a tight bottom end and goes well with my Triaxis rig. It was a little dark for my Marshall heads. My Marshall cab, I bought two v30's and swapped out two of the 75's in an X pattern. It kills now and every one that hears it can tell that it's something special. The 75's maintain the lower end and the top end, while the 30's gave it a little more warmth, for lack of a better word. It just sounds great, without being fatiguing, where as the Mesa sounds good too, but not as alive if you will.
 
Couple things for you. The Marshall Vintage cabs have a different flavor V30 than the Mesa. They are crispy on top, Mesa V30 are darker and smoother. V30s can be harsh with a Marshall, Jubilee is the exception. Gotta watch the mids. More low end with the Mesa cab. If I were you, I would look for an old JCM 800 cab from the 80s with older 75s. They are much better than the piercing 75s made today, and usually cheap. They are similar to a G12 65, which are my favorite Marshall speakers. There is a 1960a cab on guitar center online for 599 in Cali..its listed as a 260w cab. The made 65s and put them in Marshall cabs from 78-83...good luck.

16 or 8 ohm if its 16 ohm line6 vintage 30 cab is,16 ohm just an idea lol

Yes, the V30 flavors are different. Supposedly Mesa, Celestion and Marshalls are all different.
Another thing to consider with the cabs is grill cloth. It's not mentioned much, but it does make an impact. The materials on the Mesa are different from that of the Marshall.

They're both great cabs though. One of my favorite cabs for years was an old JCM800 1960a that was X-Pattern V30/T75. I had Celestion V30's in it and it sounded great for recording and live use.
 
If you're going to go with V30s I would get the Mesa cab and if you want to you can still do an X pattern with 75's or with a K-100s and it'll sound great and not fatiguing to the ear. I'm not a fan of the Marshall v30s.
