Has anyone tried a Mesa Studio Preamp? There is one for sale local to me for $350. The reverb tank is out of it but I probably wouldnt have used it even if it was. Is this an ok deal and does it sound good?

I haven't played one. However, I've been watching them on ebay/reverb for the last year, so will say that's an excellent price if it's in good shape otherwise. If it were me, I'd buy it and enjoy it at the price. Worst case, you can get your $ back down the road when you flip it.

Great preamps with classic Mark tones. I never used the reverb on it.

They're great! Use the effects send for the output. Plenty of snot and cleans up real nice, I used it with a variety of power amps including Marshall Super Leads with great success. Matched with a M/B 295 & Road Ready EV 4X12 was beyond awesome.

I loved the Quad. Sold the Studio after 1 week of use. Just didn't do it for me. A properly modified Triaxis is nice, though not as transparent as the Quad.

Thanks guys. I'm going to go try it Saturday. I really shouldn't buy anything amp related but G.A.S is a mutha

Interesting, I usually read just the opposite on the Studio and the Quad. What was it about the Studio that you didn't like in particular?

It's possible there was something wrong with the Studio. I tried changing tubes, but the result was the same. I didn't want to invest any more into it, so I moved into a Triaxis. I removed the fat mod, loved the results, then sold it. I purchased a '87 Marshall Silver Jubilee 50 watt, and haven't looked back.

Nooooo! What are planning on replacing it with?

I’ve had a Pre and have a Quad. Love them both. I would be all over a Pre for $350.

Amazing preamp if ur into the mark tone...

The rack ears are not available from Mesa anymore so if it doesn’t have them, something to consider.

My old guitar player had one. It was really nice. Typical Mark sound. I would boost it with a TS, to tighten up the low end. Great pre amp though.

I guess you could say I replaced it with a Soldano HR25, but overall just looking to reduce my amp and guitar footprint to fund the new business venture.

I decided to skip it. I played my Orthos loudly over the weekend and just felt between my KSR and my Marshall I'm good on amps. I felt good about showing some restraint.
