Me too. Mixers in the past always had Kirk too loud, this time, better imo. Lars initially tried to speed it up too fast, but kept it more real, coming off the CD tempo.

I gotta be the hater. I saw them live in the mid 90s, probably with a triaxis plus diezel rig, and it sounded way, way way, better than this.

The rhythm tone has too much midrange, and its too boxy, and not "big" enough.

its mixed very well, but i have to disagree that the rhythm tone sounds all that great.

i usually dont watch live metallica videos anymore cause it usually makes me want to throw up but i must admit this sounds pretty good.

Not a fan of this tone. Way too fizzy. Not enough clarity in the notes, way too much static in the high end, not enough balls.

I think I recognize what's going on though. It sounds like whatever IR's Metallica are using are the problem. WAY too much emphasis on super high treble, nowhere near enough mids and low mids.

What year ? In 97 he had a triaxis with triple rec at lollapoolaz . It was cool

it was at the gorge in 98 i think, but this is so many years ago i might be confusing shows
You might be right . I guess I’m just wondering when the Diezel appeared . I do know in 98 on garage inc he has wizard . Even on reload some . It’s so confusing. But what’s crazy is on hardwired he mixed the 2c++, the wizard , and the Diezel and that’s what’s on tape ? I blame Greg Feldman

They made everything sound like trash on St Anger. I put on that album the other day for the first time in over 10 years. Yikes!!

Yeah. It's awful. I dont get the recent "apologism" for that album.

Same, it's awful, top to bottom.
Bad songs, bad tone... on every instrument, bad mix.

that was honestly the most disappointed for an album i've ever been

people forget they did garage inc right before that and did cool ass covers

everyone was hopefully they'd get it together, at the time, in my memory as a 13 year old

Diezel came in during St Anger, and the Wizard wasn’t much of a factor until then either. Hetfield got 3 of them right before Reload, but it still took a backseat to Bob’s Marshall. It’s there, but you wouldn’t miss it. Garage Inc was 90% Mesa.

I think my favorite Metallica show was Lollapalooza ‘96.

the axe fx is to blame. sounds like plastic

Totally disagree. As a guy who has an Axe III and 10+ amps in my studio, the Axe can absolutely sound as-good-as tubes if you spend the time to dial it right and pay attention to your IR's. That bad live tone is absolutely user error in some way or another.

Same bro. I've also never been anywhere near as disappointed with any album as much as I was with St Anger. It might be the most disappointing media I've ever experienced. If not the most, it's definitely up there.

But yep, Garage Inc ruled and sounded fantastic too. And it's the album that basically introduced a generation of guitar players to how good Wizard amps are.

That album would have probably been better recieved if it wasn't released by metallica (a new snare sound wouldn't hurt either).
Just like countless other great bands, Metallica set the bar for too high for themselves on the first 5 records, that everything after that had a hard time standing up to those first 5.
Everything after that, while it might not be terrible, is just forgettable and always seems to fall flat in comparison.

i got to see them in Detroit on the Garage Inc tour at a small venue (2k people capacity)....that was killer, even if kirk hammet was on a stool the whole time cuz he just had surgery or something.

The wizard really shines on James side of Mercyful Fate . That song slams
