First off, let me state that this is not a "exactly like Metallica" thread. I have limited gear, limited IRs, a small room to mix in. I'm just making do with my Mesa Boogie Quad and Rectifier Stereo 2:100 in the hope of getting close to old Metallica tones.

Been really digging this amp more of late. It's just so mean, and in both of these clips, I was using the Mark IIC channel. I boosted the amp with a Gojira OD model on my Quad Cortex.

I went with completely different IRs for the single tracked clip and the dual tracked one. The settings were also changed. And the tuning is also different: on the single tracked clip, it's in D# and in the dual tracked clip, Drop D.

Guitars are also different. Dual tracked clip has my Aristides 060 with Seymour Duncan Alpha Omegas in it. Single tracked clip has my ESP E-II MK-I with Fishman Fluences in it.

First the dual tracked clip, which is a truncated cover of Creeping Death.

And then the single tracked clip, which is a bunch of Metallica songs, with a random riff and a solo at the end:

Such a heavy sounding tone. I really wonder what it would sound like with tubes cooking into a couple of cabinets

Do you have any in the room cell phone recordings of this setup? It sounds great 👍

That's a cool tone. Great job in that second clip capturing the RTL vibe.

Thanks, guys!

I tried capturing with a cellphone, but the audio was really poor.

I have a room mic, but let me see if I can get some usable volume going without my neighbours or the cops breaking down my door.

Just ask them if there is a law against rock n roll

Haha. If they don’t have one, my wife definitely has a law of her own!

Here is a very low volume comparison using a Townsend Labs Sphere as a room microphone.

Do note, I am barely pushing the power amp (I have it set up so that the controls on the Quad are the master volume for the power amp). This thing is stupid loud, and after I was done with this 10 minute video, I reminded myself to use this privilege to play loud sparingly, lest I lose it altogether.

Here’s the video:
