Hey all, I wanted to post up a mini review of Mark’s Guitar Loft and MGL amps. I was initially headed there to pick up a used head shell for a hand wired plexi. I have been a customer of Mark’s over the years and he always seems to have the best Gibson and Fender guitars. Last time I was there I left with a 59 RI and this time ended up with an amazing Fender CS 57 RI. Mark is always super cool has an awesome shop in NH. He even had a suggestion on a change to the plexi that made it warmer and less fizzy. Mark is super knowledgeable and an amp and guitar fanatic like most of us.

I also played though the new MGL 100 and that is one ass kicking amp, not a bad tone in it and an absurd amount of gain but always retains clarity. Having had every Bogner, Wizard, Carol Ann, VHT, Marshall, Diezel, Suhr, Friedman, amp there is I can honestly say this is as good of an amp as you can get and easily in the top few amps I have every played or owned. I love the 3 preamp tube design, because while it is way more gain then I would ever want it retains clarity and articulation regardless of the gain level.

I found I could get the heaviest tone imaginable or the best classic Marshall tone you could ever want, great cleans too. Loop was also stellar, it just has that punchy aggressive warm Marshall thing at any volume, which I love. The website very accurately describes the MGL as a two channel “100w master volume amp that combines tones & feel from the 3 great Marshall 100w eras, Plexi, ‘70’s metal panel and JMP-JCM 2203” Now what to sell to get one LOL, the only other thing I talked with Mark about was adding a Wizard style “tone” knob on the back of the amp for just the clean channel to help dial in the clean a bit more when you are going for the two channel/clean dirty thing as it has shared tone controls. It’s still very good as is but this would, for me, be a plus. Cleaned up super well with volume knob and both strats and les pauls killed in this amp. I am super picky and fickle but can honestly say this amp kills and has top notch build quality and parts. Feel free to PM with any questions!

You can check out my Cross Country Driver project which also features dug pinnick, Mike Mangini, Rhonda Smith, Viv Campbell, Greg Chaisson and Rob Lamothe below to get an idea of the tones I go for.

chaisson is no joke on bass
He did a great job on the record! Rob (singer in Cross Country Driver and Riverdogs) and Greg go way back, Rob was at one time asked to replace Ray in Badlands but didnt feel like he could do it justice, there is even a version of the River from Badlands that Rob sang on Gregs solo record on youtube that is awesome. Greg is a super cool dude and was great having him on the record.
